{"id":2443426,"date":"2026-06-03T17:34:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T17:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2443426"},"modified":"2026-06-03T17:34:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T17:34:20","slug":"prince-of-wales-we-need-to-protect-britains-pubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/prince-of-wales-we-need-to-protect-britains-pubs\/","title":{"rendered":"Prince of Wales: We need to protect Britain\u2019s pubs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-test=\"article-body-text\">\n<p>Some 534 pubs have announced their intention to close down since January, data from the Campaign for Real Ale, analysed by The Telegraph, have previously shown.<\/p>\n<p>Of these, seven are fighting to reopen, while more than 153 are seeking a new owner or tenant.<\/p>\n<p>In her autumn Budget, the Chancellor announced that <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2026\/01\/14\/rachel-reeves-pubs-must-pay-their-fair-share\/\">Covid-era business rates relief for the hospitality sector<\/a> would end in April, after it was gradually scaled back.<\/p>\n<p>She has since <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/01\/27\/pub-relief-labour-tax\/\">climbed down on business rate changes<\/a>, which threatened to leave some with their tax bills doubling overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with the burdens of the employers\u2019 National Insurance increase, an increase in alcohol duty, and a rise in the minimum wage, the sector warned it faced potential ruin.<\/p>\n<p>While landlords have largely welcomed Ms Reeves\u2019s reversal, the British Beer and Pub Association, which represents more than 20,000 members, <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2026\/01\/12\/reeves-pub-business-rate-climbdown-not-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warned that the sector<\/a> \u201ccontinues to face huge challenges\u201d and called on the Government to go further.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"u-heading-size-medium u-heading-style-normal\">\u2018Most of the time we hear bad stuff\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, the Prince of Wales visited Pecan, a community charity in Peckham.<\/p>\n<p>While there, he spoke about how the 24-hour news cycle and mobile phone use are partially to blame for driving rising depression and loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWith everyone\u2019s phones now you can get so much news, that actually it completely overwhelms you in terms of being able to process this and that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd unfortunately most of the time we hear bad stuff, so you can reinforce someone into the bad place and depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou reinforce innocently [just] looking at your phone and the news so I can see that it\u2019s overwhelming when you feel like it\u2019s just negativity all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, he met with staff members, volunteers and Pecan clients \u2013 many of whom have escaped homelessness and poverty through the charity\u2019s services.<\/p>\n<p>After hearing from Stella, who told him how she had been sleeping on the streets before the Pecan team found her in 2017, Prince William said: \u201cIt\u2019s amazing what you guys do. It puts people\u2019s lives back on track again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Prince added: \u201cThis feels like a very happy family. But that family point and that caring is so important at the moment \u2013 it\u2019s the magic ingredient of a really good charity.
