These cetaceans live in the Marineland Antibes park on the French Riviera, which closed in 2025. In 2021, France passed a law banning the breeding and keeping of cetaceans in captivity for entertainment shows, which will come into effect on Dec. 2, 2026. The orcas and dolphins at Marineland were the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/monacolife.net\/marineland-antibes-to-close-permanently-in-january-amid-animal-mistreatment-controversy\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">primary draw<\/a> for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The two orcas (<em>Orcinus orca<\/em>), Wikie, aged 25, and her son, Keijo, aged 12, were born at Marineland Antibes on the French Riviera and spent all their lives in concrete tanks and performing in display shows. They will now be moved to Loro Parque, a zoo and entertainment park in Tenerife on the Canary Islands. The dolphins will be split up between two parks in Valencia and M\u00e1laga on the Spanish mainland, with plans for some of them to return to France\u2019s Beauval Zoo, when it\u2019s ready to have them, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/planete\/article\/2026\/05\/15\/le-marineland-d-antibes-veut-envoyer-ses-deux-orques-et-douze-dauphins-en-espagne-avant-la-fin-de-juin_6689433_3244.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">reporting<\/a> by <em>Le Monde<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A court-appointed expert team <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/planete\/article\/2026\/02\/16\/marineland-d-antibes-le-bassin-des-orques-en-degradation-structurelle-avancee-selon-un-rapport-d-expertise_6666949_3244.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">found<\/a> in February 2026 that the concrete tanks in which the orcas lived at Marineland Antibes were in advanced structural decline, and if the mammals weren\u2019t moved soon, they would have to be euthanized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFaced with this emergency, we are acting to avert the worst,\u201d Mathieu Lef\u00e8vre, France\u2019s minister delegate for ecological transition, said in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ecologie.gouv.fr\/presse\/avenir-cetaces-marineland-mathieu-lefevre-annonce-que-feux-sont-vert-cote-etat-leur\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">statement<\/a>, explaining the rationale for the decision. \u201cLoro Parque is currently the best viable option for the orcas.\u201d The cetaceans are expected to be transferred as early as June, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldanimalprotection.org\/latest\/news\/marineland-orcas-loro-parque-transfer-concerns\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">according<\/a> to animal welfare NGO World Animal Protection, which has been following the case of the mother-son duo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_320541\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/03141921\/Show-Orcas-Loroparque.jpg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orcas performing in Loro Parque in Tenerife. A seaside sanctuary is specifically designed to keep once-captive cetaceans in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat, rather than cramped concrete tanks typically found in marine parks. But since these animals have spent most of their years in captivity, they don\u2019t have the survival skills necessary to live in the ocean on their own, and continue to depend on humans for food and care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will do far better in terms of welfare on a daily basis if they have more natural surroundings as well as human care,\u201d Naomi Rose, a marine mammal scientist at the U.S.-based Animal Welfare Institute, previously <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/03\/belugas-facing-euthanasia-at-shuttered-canada-theme-park-may-find-new-homes-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">told<\/a> Mongabay. \u201cYou put a large, wide-ranging carnivore in confinement, and they are going to, at the very best, develop neurosis, and at the very worst, develop serious health problems.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2025, plans were being <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/whalesanctuaryproject.org\/french-government-statement-re-orcas-wikie-keijo\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">finalized<\/a> to ship the orcas to a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/03\/belugas-facing-euthanasia-at-shuttered-canada-theme-park-may-find-new-homes-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">whale sanctuary<\/a> being built off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, by mid-2026. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/whalesanctuaryproject.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">The Whale Sanctuary Project<\/a>, which will cost $12 million to $15 million, was also in talks to welcome some of the 30 beluga whales (<em>Delphinapterus leucas<\/em>) from another shuttered entertainment park in Ontario, Marineland Canada, which is unrelated to the one in France. But those plans did not materialize, and the Canadian government <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/03\/belugas-facing-euthanasia-at-shuttered-canada-theme-park-may-find-new-homes-in-us\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">endorsed a plan earlier this year<\/a> to send the belugas to U.S. aquariums. In June 2026, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/hamilton\/marineland-belugas-rescue-spain-9.7220888\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">local media reported<\/a> that Oceanogr\u00e0fic Val\u00e8ncia in Spain, Europe\u2019s largest aquarium, will now receive some of the whales.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2026, Lef\u00e8vre met in Paris with representatives from the under-construction sanctuary to learn when it would be completed, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/french-government-learns-more-about-nova-scotia-proposal-9.7093876\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">local reports<\/a>. Two of them were born in the park as part of its breeding program. Recent orca deaths have raised questions about their health and well-being: between 2021 and 2024, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/report-on-the-deaths-of-three-orcas-in-loro-parque\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">four<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/loro-parque-mourns-the-death-of-keto\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">orcas<\/a> died at Loro Parque. There are also allegations of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldanimalprotection.org\/latest\/news\/teno-the-four-month-old-orca-already-performing-loro-parque\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">animal abuse<\/a>, including using a 4-month-old orca being used in training and shows. While the park has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/enough-of-false-accusations-against-loro-parque\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">refuted<\/a> some of the abuse allegations, it has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/teno-is-two-months-old-his-development-is-a-success-and-morgan-proves-to-be-an-exemplary-mother\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">acknowledged<\/a> the training of the young orca.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear if Wikie and Keijo would be bred or used for entertainment in their potential new home. In a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/loro-parque-is-willing-to-collaborate-in-the-rescue-of-the-marineland-orcas-to-ensure-their-survival-if-requested-and-provided-the-operation-has-the-explicit-approval-of-the-spanish-government\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">public statement<\/a>, Loro Parque said the transfer \u201cis not driven by economic or commercial interests\u201d and that it is accepting the two orcas out of \u201cmoral, technical, and professional responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do it because we know how to care for these animals and because we want to prevent Wikie and Keijo from dying in France without a real alternative,\u201d Wolfgang Kiessling, Loro Parque Group\u2019s president, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The park has bred orcas as recently as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/more-than-7000-internet-users-choose-teno-as-the-name-for-morgans-baby-orca-at-loro-parque\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">March 2025<\/a>. Morgan, a wild orca rescued off the coast of the Netherlands in 2010, was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loroparque.com\/en\/history-of-morgan\/?_gl=1%252A15w1h2%252A_up%252AMQ..%252A_ga%252AODY3MTY3ODA1LjE3Nzk5MDAzNjM.%252A_ga_VTB15FWBRN%252AczE3Nzk5MDAzNjMkbzEkZzEkdDE3Nzk5MDA4MTMkajYwJGwwJGg0NzIyNTAwMg..\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">shifted<\/a> to the park a year later. She has had two calves so far, of which one died.<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide, an estimated 3,700 cetaceans live in captivity, most of them in concrete tanks at marine parks and zoos. But public sentiment toward these captive animals has changed in recent years, with movies such as <em>Blackfish <\/em>and <em>Free Willy <\/em>depicting the toll a life of confinement takes on these intelligent mammals. The park <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maspalomas24h.uk\/art\/9330\/loro-parque-desafia-al-cites-de-madrid-por-opacidad-cientifica\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">challenged<\/a> that decision in court. Mongabay contacted Spain\u2019s CITES authorities to ask whether the agency has now permitted these transfers, but didn\u2019t receive a response by the time this story was published.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to transfer the orcas is a \u201csystematic failure,\u201d World Animal Protection <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldanimalprotection.org\/latest\/press-releases\/plans-to-ship-marineland-orcas-to-spanish-zoo-branded-irresponsible-by-animal-welfare-ngos\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said<\/a> in a press release. \u201cIf the intent of the French legislation is to be upheld, Wikie and Keijo should not be used for breeding or performances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Whale Sanctuary Project has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/whalesanctuaryproject.org\/on-losing-wiki-and-keijo\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said<\/a> marine parks and zoos, including Marineland Antibes, have \u201crefused to even engage in discussion with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad the Minister kept his word and supported his own nation\u2019s law to ban cetacean captivity for entertainment and breeding, Wikie and Keijo would have had a different future \u2014 a much brighter future,\u201d the Whale Sanctuary Project said in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/whalesanctuaryproject.org\/on-losing-wiki-and-keijo\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">statement<\/a>. \u201cNow they will never know what they came so close to having.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Banner image:<\/strong> Orcas performing in a show at Marineland Antibes in 2013.
