Apple\u2019s \u201cCape Fear\u201d revival is slick, stylish \u2014\u00a0and brutal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a star-studded crime drama with standout performances from Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson and Javier Bardem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also hard to see why this show exists when there are two famous \u201cCape Fear\u201d movies \u2014 do we need a third version?\u00a0But if you ignore that element, if you just want a sun-drenched, blood-soaked thriller series, it\u2019s a compelling watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCape Fear\u201d follows affluent lawyer couple, Tom (Wilson) and Anna Bowden (Adams), who live in Savannah, Georgia, with their teenage son and daughter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Their lives get shaken up when Anna\u2019s former client, Max Cady (Bardem), gets released from prison after 17 years. It becomes a hot news item; he\u2019s dubbed America\u2019s most famous exoneree.<\/p>\n

Years ago, Cady pleaded guilty to murdering his pregnant wife. Now that he has apparently been deemed innocent \u2014 his mistress claimed that she <\/em>did the grisly crime \u2014 the public sentiment is turning against Anna, who was his lawyer at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To make matters look worse for her, Tom was the prosecutor who put Max in prison, and Anna and Tom got together during the trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A newly freed Cady is out for revenge on the couple.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The series is the third iteration of this story.\u00a0Every version of the plot follows Cady, an ex con out to menace Bowden, the lawyer he blames for his incarceration.<\/p>\n

It started as a 1957 novel called \u201cThe Executioners.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then, it was adapted into the first \u201cCape Fear,\u201d a 1962 movie starring Gregory Peck<\/a> as Bowden and Robert Mitchum as Cady.\u00a0In the movie, Cady was a psycho and Bowden was a good guy.<\/p>\n

The most famous version is the 1991 \u201cCape Fear\u201d from Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro<\/a> as Cady and Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis as members of the Bowden family.\u00a0In this movie, Cady is a madman but Bowden is more morally gray.<\/p>\n

Scorsese is involved in this series as an exec producer, and so is Steven Spielberg, who also produced the \u201991 flick.<\/p>\n

The new \u201cCape Fear\u201d is as competent and polished as the star power would suggest.<\/p>\n

Still, it\u2019s baffling why there are now three versions of this story. It\u2019s a provocative, sometimes nasty thriller about revenge, guilt and the justice system.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not \u201cPride and Prejudice\u201d or \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d <\/a>\u2014 the type of timeless classic where it makes sense to put out a new one every decade.<\/p>\n

It also works best as a two-hour film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The series tries to pump out enough material for 10 episodes. It mostly succeeds \u2014 give or take feeling drawn out, at times \u2014 though you may question if you want<\/em> to feel so tense for 10 hours rather than two.\u00a0<\/p>\n

De Niro\u2019s version of Cady raped a teenage girl. Bardem\u2019s version of Cady killed his pregnant wife, and his guilt is called into question.<\/p>\n

The show removes the rape element and ages up his victim, but Cady is hardly softened into a kitten. Bardem hasn\u2019t been this menacing since \u201cNo Country For Old Men.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

The \u201cCape Fear\u201d series also has more adjustments for the modern era.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lawyer wasn\u2019t a woman in earlier versions of the story.\u00a0The show also includes more about the media\u2019s role in all this, and it weaves in the true crime ecosystem, including podcasters who are eager to cover the saga.<\/p>\n

Of course, it wouldn\u2019t be a 2026 story if AI wasn\u2019t involved, too. There\u2019s a scene in which the Bowdens\u2019 teenage son watches a creepy AI video of a teenage boy telling the camera, \u201cMy name is Adam Cady and I never got to be born. This is how I might look today if my dad didn\u2019t butcher my mom when she was pregnant with me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

So, the show does take pains to add new elements and pepper it with references that couldn\u2019t have existed in the \u201860s or \u201890s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All the while, the music and cinematography make it feel retro and timeless.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Viewers may question whether we needed this. We didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Looking past that \u201cwhy is it here?\u201d factor, it\u2019s worth a watch if you want a well-made Southern gothic suspense.\u00a0<\/p>\n
