Newly released images show<\/a> the
\ncompleted Thistle Maze, a striking new addition to the grounds of
\nBalmoral Castle that was commissioned by the King in memory of his
\nmother.<\/p>\nThe maze, which takes the shape of Scotland\u2019s national flower,
\nthe thistle, is believed to be only the second royal maze created
\nin Britain in the past 300 years.<\/p>\n
Situated within the estate\u2019s historic gardens, the project
\ncombines one of the King\u2019s lifelong interests with a tribute to the
\nplace that held a special significance for Queen Elizabeth
\nthroughout her life.<\/p>\n
The late Queen spent much of her private time at Balmoral and
\ndied peacefully there on 8 September 2022 after a reign spanning 70
\nyears.<\/p>\n
The maze was created by Aberdeenshire-based company Nicol of
\nSkene, which was tasked with bringing the King\u2019s vision to
\nlife.<\/p>\n
Reports suggest Charles has been fascinated by mazes since
\nchildhood, making the project both a personal passion and a lasting
\nmemorial to his mother.<\/p>\n
The new attraction forms part of Balmoral\u2019s historic gardens,
\nmany of which were originally developed under the guidance of
\nPrince Albert after the estate was purchased by Queen Victoria and
\nher husband in 1852.<\/p>\n
The unveiling comes shortly after the publication of a new
\nguidebook for visitors to Balmoral, in which the King reflected on
\nthe estate\u2019s enduring importance to the Royal Family.<\/p>\n
Writing in the foreword, Charles described Balmoral as a
\n\u201ccherished\u201d family home and spoke movingly about his mother\u2019s
\naffection for the estate.<\/p>\n
He wrote that Balmoral has held \u201ca uniquely special place\u201d in
\nthe hearts of his family since childhood and said Queen Elizabeth
\n\u201cparticularly treasured her time\u201d there.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on her final days, the King added: \u201cIt was here, in
\nthese most beloved of surroundings, that she chose to spend her
\nfinal days.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Scottish retreat has become an increasingly important part
\nof Charles\u2019s reign. In 2024, he opened Balmoral Castle to public
\ntours for the first time in more than 170 years and has overseen a
\nnumber of changes to both the interior and the estate grounds.<\/p>\n
The completion of the Thistle Maze adds another chapter to
\nBalmoral\u2019s history while serving as a lasting reminder of the
\nmonarch who regarded the estate as her sanctuary for more than
\nseven decades.<\/p>\n
