Let\u2019s not dwell on that, though. It\u2019s World Cup summer, festival summer, and while I\u2019m not 100 percent sure if it\u2019s still Brat Summer, this is your Bits summer column.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the sound of summer? Going by this month\u2019s reviews, it\u2019s guitar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plasticine <\/strong>serve up another blend of anthemic and ethereal with \u2018Falling\u2019. Coming from a band with lofty ambitions, the song breaks out of the ballad mould with a few big reaches and guitar lines that would grace any classic rock band going serious. When this band builds momentum with a few back-to-back releases, there\u2019s every chance they\u2019ll take off.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PLASTICINE - Falling || Official Music Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bl8X5Eu2l5E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even though they released music last September, it felt as though <strong>Fright Years<\/strong> had been quiet for some time. That owes a lot to the fact they released consistently likeable singles, but the good news is, the minor gap hasn\u2019t diminished them. \u2018Never Been Wrong\u2019 is pretty damn good.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re blessed with so many local bands making ambitious, fully-formed and anthemic music, and this would slip onto any guitar-friendly radio playlist with ease. Great to have them back.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fright Years - Never Been Wrong (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SsBuAmvFuiw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let\u2019s round out this section of big guitars and female voices ringing into the night with something (relatively) new: <strong>Ellijai<\/strong>. We covered her last issue, so we\u2019re delighted she\u2019s back with \u2018Smoke Away\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ELLIJAI - SMOKE AWAY (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nY_hzC6pmu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s slightly bratty with a bite, but there\u2019s great swagger and a chorus that would be as home in your favourite indie disco as it would in a pivotal scene in a teen rom-com. This batch suggests good poppy guitar music with a punch is still being made in Scotland. Ideal for summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cinnamon Skies\u2019 by <strong>Ellyn Oliver<\/strong> is similar to the last bunch of songs, adjacent, if you will, but slower, more mature. Folkier, but no less moving, and the shuffling drums sweep you along. Throw in yearning strings and it\u2019s a song to empathise with.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ellyn Oliver<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some modal guitar runs means <strong>Limerence<\/strong> are very much on trend for this summer, but this is no flash in the pan. \u2018She Bites\u2019 lives up to its title, a gravelly intro giving way to a guitar thrash that will surely kick off a moshpit. Because you\u2019ll already know how sweet it is, and you\u2019ll be happy that others get to hear it too. There\u2019s tinges of American guitar-pop (from Weezer to Nada Surf), clever lines \u2013 lyrically and guitar \u2013 wrestling with a Scottish tinge to make something familiar but fresh.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Marlene\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_QEaijCNl0Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The backing vocals on \u2018Shanghai\u2019 by <strong>Scout Coast<\/strong> also fit that bill. This is frothy and could well be a people pleaser; it has that easygoing, hummable feel to it. Sometimes, all you need is an ice cream. There\u2019s a massive whoo, the guitar line is slightly sneering, and there\u2019s a late 90s glam-stomp feel to large parts. If you can imagine Spacehog meets Geneva, you\u2019d be close . . . while obviously not being exactly right either. Worth checking out to see if it\u2019s your thing.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=4146855716\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/velvetbandglasgow.bandcamp.com\/album\/under-the-water\">Under The Water by Velvet<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The drum intro on \u2018Sundried\u2019 by <strong>Cormac Flynn<\/strong> is the most frenzied sound in this month\u2019s column. Even that chills out before too long \u2013 it\u2019s too warm to hurry, much more important things to worry about. This track, drums aside, keeps you on an even keel, a bit fuzzy but catchy, and a good few hooks peppered throughout.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d prefer something that starts gently, but no less melodic, \u2018Tony (Come Home)\u2019 by <strong>Lyle Busby<\/strong> is what you\u2019re after. It starts easy listening, with a cheeky swing, but it crashes into life, some warm sax smoothing all over your ears. The lyrical theme might be darker than what we\u2019re picking up here, but if you\u2019re planning for the hazy days and long, long nights, it\u2019s perfectly placed to fit right in with your activities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lyle Busby - Tony (Come Home)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AypLaB_KtK4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And whatever those activities are, enjoy them.
