A group of famous New Yorkers \u2014 Spike Lee, Amy Schumer, John Krasinski, Natasha Lyonne, Darren Aronofsky and Celine Song \u2014 appear in a PSA released by mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s office of media and entertainment about the city as the ideal destination for filmmaking.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re cutting the red tape and making it the easiest place to film in the country,\u201d Rafael Espinal, commissioner of the media and entertainment office, said in a social media clip introducing the PSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cPeople are in the habit of discounting New York because they think it\u2019s so expensive, or it seems unattainable to shoot here,\u201d Schumer says in the PSA. \u201cThen you find out, with the tax breaks here, it\u2019s never been easier to shoot in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n Lee adds, \u201cI remember there was a time where a lot of stuff would shoot in Toronto, but it\u2019s not New York. You save a couple of nickels \u2014 you don\u2019t even have to know it was shot in Toronto \u2014 but you feel like something\u2019s off.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s so magical, what happens when you\u2019re shooting in New York,\u201d says Lyonne. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing in the world like a New York night shoot, and everything\u2019s all sparkly, and the lights. \u2018After Hours,\u2019 \u2018Taxi Driver,\u2019 \u2018Midnight Cowboy\u2019 \u2014 it\u2019s Manhattan.\u201d<\/p>\n Krasinski attested to the ease of filming in the city. \u201cWorking with the film office here in New York and the city agencies has been a dream come true because I think there\u2019s an understanding from all sides how special it is to shoot in New York.\u201d Says Lee, \u201cWhether a student film or a big-bifget film, they\u2019re gonna do what they can to help you make your film.\u201d<\/p>\n Concluding the video, Schumer says, \u201cNew York is there to service whatever you\u2019re looking for and the story you\u2019re telling. One of the things that you learn as a filmmaker is that every frame should have a purpose. It should be part of telling your story.
