Pahlaj Nihalani Passes Away: Govinda, David Dhawan And Other Bollywood Celebs Attend Last Rites <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Veteran producer and former CBFC chairman Pahlaj Nihalani passed away on June 4, 2026. Several prominent Bollywood personalities gathered to pay their final respects. Among those present at the last rites were actor Govinda and filmmaker David Dhawan, both of whom shared a long-standing professional and personal association with Nihalani. Visuals from the funeral showed members of the film industry coming together to honour Nihalani\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

Viral Bhayani shared the videos of celebrities attending the last rites. Govinda was seen turning emotional as he posed for the camera. Malaika Arora along with her family attended the last rites. David Dhawan along with Varun was also spotted. Saif Ali Khan and Shatrughan Sinha also attended. Earlier many celebrities offered condolences on social media. Chunky Panday shared the photo of the Pahlaj Nihalani and paid tribute. Kangana Ranaut wrote, \u201cDeeply saddened to hear about the passing of Pahlaj Nihalani ji. A producer who backed numerous films, launched and supported many artists, and remained passionately committed to Indian cinema for decades, his contribution to the film industry will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Om Shanti.” Kamaal R Khan wrote, \u201cRIP Pahlaj Nihalani Sahab! You did a very good job as a film maker. We all have to follow you sir. This is the real truth of the life.”<\/p>\n

Pahlaj Nihalani\u2019s Work<\/p>\n

Pahlaj Nihalani served as president of the Association of Pictures and TV Programme Producers for 29 years before stepping down in 2009.<\/p>\n

Pahlaj Nihalani was especially known for his long association with actor Govinda and for backing several of the star\u2019s early hit films.<\/p>\n

Pahlaj Nihalani made his debut as a producer with Haathkadi in 1982, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Shatrughan Sinha. He followed it up with Aandhi-Toofan in 1985. In 1986, he produced Ilzaam, which became a landmark film as it marked Govinda\u2019s debut in Hindi cinema.<\/p>\n

Nihalani continued his production streak with Aag Hi Aag, Gunahon Ka Faisla and Paap Ki Duniya followed by Mitti Aur Sona in 1989.<\/p>\n

CBFC Tenure<\/p>\n

Nihalani served as CBFC chairperson from January 2015 to August 2017.\u00a0Shortly after taking charge, he introduced a set of strict guidelines that proposed a complete ban on the use of abusive language, even in films rated \u2018A\u2019. He also stated that depictions of violence against women would be discouraged and that any content seen as hurting religious sentiments would not be permitted.<\/p>\n

His tenure soon drew public attention over multiple censorship decisions. One such instance was the trimming of kissing scenes in the James Bond film Spectre, which led to criticism on social media. Nihalani defended the move, saying the cuts were made in line with existing rules.<\/p>\n
