On Netflix.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As Jennifer Lopez makes her entrance in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/26\/entertainment\/office-romance-la-premiere-red-carpet-jennifer-lopez-brett-goldstein-adam-sandler-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix\u2019s\u00a0\u201cOffice Romance,\u201d <\/a>the seventies song \u201cI Believe In Miracles\u201d by Hot Chocolate (\u201cWhere ya from? You sexy thing!\u201d) plays.<\/p>\n<p>And, suddenly and wincingly, we\u2019re back in 2000, when that retro tune and J.Lo were rom-com regulars.<\/p>\n<p>Lo, how times have changed.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cThis Is Me\u2026 Now\u201d singer is demonstrably obsessed with what she was then. Lopez has repeatedly and unsuccessfully tried over the past decade to return to the era of \u201cMaid in Manhattan\u201d and \u201cMonster-In-Law\u201d by starring in a string of mostly hopped-up duds: \u201cSecond Act,\u201d \u201cMarry Me,\u201d \u201cShotgun Wedding\u201d and now \u201cOffice Romance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What could that last one possibly be about?!<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>It\u2019s time to give it a rest.<\/p>\n<p>I still love the genre. But the key to saving\u00a0romantic comedies\u00a0is not\u00a0by\u00a0replicating 25-year-old movies that haven\u2019t aged particularly well\u00a0with the same stars.\u00a0Lopez, by the way,\u00a0is now far better suited to less fizzy roles, such as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/07\/entertainment\/unstoppable-tiff-review-jennifer-lopez-stars-in-a-fantastic-inspiring-sports-movie\/\">the strong mom in \u201cUnstoppable.\u201d <\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even the core conflict of \u201cOffice Romance\u201d is old-hat, \u201cAlly McBeal\u201d stuff \u2014 sleeping with a coworker.<\/p>\n<p>Lopez\u2019s latest love-challenged lead is Jackie Cruz, the powerful CEO of an airline called AirCruz that she founded with her father, Jack. He\u2019s played by Edward James Olmos, one of several famous stars who are totally wasted by this material.<\/p>\n<p>The logline calls Jackie a \u201cworkaholic,\u201d although she just comes across as vaguely uptight to me, not unlike a certain planner of weddings.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein star in Netflix\u2019s \u201cOffice Romance.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Netflix\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her meetings-and-emails existence is shaken up when another job-focused\u00a0person arrives in the form of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/06\/02\/celebrity-news\/jennifer-lopez-and-brett-goldstein-had-secret-fling-while-filming-office-romance-but-it-fizzled-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel (Brett Goldstein), a shy British lawyer who steps up<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0his AirCruz boss Peter (Bradley Whitford, yet more waste) is sidelined with an injury.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel firmly believes in leaving one\u2019s personal life at the revolving door.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That lasts for about 15 minutes, when raw attraction intervenes. The pair meet in Jackie\u2019s office,\u00a0and\u00a0Daniel gets a rather operatic erection and scurries away. Pretty creepy. But no! The script by Goldstein and Joe Kelly thinks\u00a0some phallic fun on the clock is\u00a0super\u00a0sweet.<\/p>\n<p>The hot lawyer defends Jackie when a rival airline makes a spurious allegation \u2014 that she\u00a0rolled in the hay\u00a0with the head of a Texas airport to secure gates that\u00a0had been\u00a0promised to her competitor.\u00a0Her primary legal argument is that she hasn\u2019t had sex in years, least of all\u00a0with professional colleagues.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Two workaholics, Jackie and Daniel, wind up hooking up on the job. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Netflix\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, that claim is complicated when she starts secretly hopping in the sack with Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>And, uh oh, the HR director played by \u201cVeep\u201d actor Tony Hale (wasted!) says the company has a \u201czero tolerance\u201d policy when it comes to coworker relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the movie, directed by Ol Parker, is just that. \u201cWe can\u2019t! We must! We can\u2019t! We must!\u201d. Breaking up the monotony is a peculiar subplot involving Daniel\u2019s sister Lizzy (Jodie Whittaker),\u00a0a\u00a0foul-mouthed freak who\u2019s\u00a0imprisoned in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an advertising quote for the marketers: \u201cA laugh an hour!\u201d\u00a0Daniel\u2019s main dusty gag is observing differences in British and American culture: Football v. soccer, pounds v. dollars, the c-word and on and on. It\u2019s actually surprising that a British person co-wrote this. They\u2019re funny!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>At the pair\u2019s courtship intensifies, work becomes more complicated. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One\u00a0supporting\u00a0actor who is not wasted is Betty Gilpin as an AirCruz staffer named Sydney whose day-to-day is so dominated by work that she gives birth in an office closet. Unfortunately, we get a full, unobstructed view of it.\u00a0The mix of this movie is truly bizarre \u2014 at once genitalia-joke lowbrow and scented-candle cute.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Goldstein\u2019s writing, in corporate parlance, leaves room for improvement, as an actor he\u2019s \u201cOffice Romance\u201d\u2019s employee of the month. His honest, rough-around-the-edges TV persona from \u201cTed Lasso\u201d wipes some of the vaseline off the camera lens. He draws us in with charm and mystery, and is both sensitive and unglamorous.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lopez should give up on making more romantic comedies. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not Lopez though. She\u2019s always nice to see, like a visiting aunt. But she doesn\u2019t have much chemistry with her co-star, in part because the script\u00a0he wrote\u00a0isn\u2019t genuinely romantic. At one point, a tumbleweed rolled through my tear ducts.
