Vince Staples<\/a> is back with a new album, and it\u2019s a sound fans haven\u2019t heard yet from the ever-experimental rapper. <\/p>\n On June 5, Staples released Cry Baby<\/em>, his first album in two years. The record takes inspiration from post-punk, full of synths, teeth-rattling bass with an unmistakable dark groove, and blown-out vocals. <\/p>\n The album was preceded by singles \u201cBlackberry Marmalade,\u201d \u201cWhite Flag,\u201d and \u201cCotton.\u201d \u201cBlackberry Marmalade\u201d was accompanied by a provocative video of a faceless shooter murdering Staples before opening fire on Black patrons at a diner, eventually turning the gun on himself. The video was shot in first-person perspective, a la a shooting game. <\/p>\n Emphasizing continuity for the rollout, \u201cWhite Flag\u201d shows Staples painting the American flag white, a universal symbol for a truce or surrender. The final video before the album, \u201cCotton,\u201d shows the flag being used as a projector screen.<\/p>\n Staples isn\u2019t new to experimentation, most notably going into more abrasive hyperpop with 2016\u2019s Big Fish Theory<\/em>, which featured production from the genre\u2019s late pioneer SOPHIE. Staples addressed the shock of his latest sound upon the release of \u201cBlackberry Marmalade\u201d with an X post that read, \u201cAll you #newbooties mad about the sound would\u2019ve hated me in 2013 but that\u2019s before yall was off the porch.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n At the top of the year, Staples\u2019 self-titled Netflix show was canceled<\/a> after two seasons.
