\nThe New Ulm Municipal Band performs during the first concert of the German Park Concert Series this past Wednesday.<\/p>\n

NEW ULM \u2013\u00a0 New Ulm Municipal Band continued its celebration of 80 years of existence with the first German Park concert of their 2026 summer series on Wednesday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

The group began with a rehearsal at Brown and Meidl\u2019s Music Store on March 4, 1946, with 40 musicians in attendance. They have been playing music for the town of New Ulm ever since.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To commemorate 80 years of history, a book about the band\u2019s history will be available late June or early July.<\/p>\n

Don Jirak, director of the New Ulm Municipal Band, enjoys the community aspect of the concerts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe get to entertain the people of New Ulm. Hopefully the things we play are crowd pleasers,\u201d Jirak said.<\/p>\n

Jirak said the band is open to anyone \u201cwilling to commit time and effort.\u201d New Ulm Municipal Band accepts anyone from seventh grade up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As director, Jirak is in charge of arranging concerts around town and selecting the music played at each event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wednesday night\u2019s concert opened with John Philip Sousa\u2019s \u201cThe Thunderer\u201d which Sousa said was his first distinctly American march.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Following performances of pieces from \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera,\u201d \u201cThe Music Man,\u201dand originals created in Ulm, Germany, the concert concluded with \u201cSousa\u2019s Stars and Stripes Forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Ulm Municipal Band has a range of events slated for the summer. They will play every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at German Park through the end of July.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The band will also be playing at Oak Hills on June 24 and perform for Bavarian Blast on July 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Cathedral High School band room.\u00a0<\/p>\n
