Former prince Andrew made money by subletting cottages during
\nhis time at Royal Lodge.<\/p>\n
The younger brother of King Charles lived at the thirty room
\nresidence for over twenty years.<\/p>\n
Now, a new report has revealed he was allowed to sublet cottages
\nbelonging to the property and rented out three residences during
\nhis time there.<\/p>\n
The investigation, by the National Audit Office, was unable to
\nidentify how much money Andrew made by letting the cottages.<\/p>\n
During his two decades at Royal Lodge, on the Windsor estate, he
\npaid only a peppercorn rent. This is a small, nominal fee \u2013 usually
\na peppercorn. The arrangement was made in exchange for him funding
\nextensive renovations at the property. It\u2019s understood the
\npeppercorns were never asked for or handed over.<\/p>\n
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor gave up his tenancy of Royal Lodge
\nand moved to the Sandringham estate earlier this year. He now lives
\nin a property belonging to his brother, The King.<\/p>\n
Royal Lodge and the cottages he sublet are part of the Crown
\nEstate.<\/p>\n
The report also confirmed that Andrew is entitled to
\ncompensation after voluntarily giving up the tenancy of Royal Lodge
\nearly. It estimates he is owed around \u00a3301, 000. However, this will
\nbe set against the cost of repairs that will need to be made to the
\nproperty following his residence there. It is believed these
\ndilapidation costs will cancel out any money owed.<\/p>\n
The report into the royal residences also revealed that Andrew\u2019s
\ntwo daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, have homes
\nwithin royal palaces which attract a rent set at around 60% of
\nmarket value in the area. The report also revealed that the cost of
\nthis rent is covered by The King, meaning that neither princess
\npays for their central London homes.<\/p>\n
Neither Beatrice nor Eugenie is a working member of the Royal
\nFamily and both have private homes outside the capital.<\/p>\n
The NAO report outlined which royals are living on property
\nowned by the Crown estate. Currently, properties belonging to the
\nestate are let to the Prince and Princess of Wales who have a
\ntwenty year lease on Forest Lodge on the Windsor estate. The Duke
\nand Duchess of Edinburgh live at another Crown estate property,
\nBagshot Park. Princess Alexandra, who remains a working royal
\nalthough her engagements are now much curtailed as she approaches
\nher 90th birthday this year, is a tenant at Thatched Lodge at
\nRichmond.<\/p>\n
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also permitted to sublet
\nproperty at their home and did rent out a stable block there until
\n2020. Again, figures for the money made in that process are
\nunavailable.<\/p>\n
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor left Royal Lodge in early 2026,
\nhaving agreed to move out in October 2025 when King Charles also
\nstripped his brother of his royal titles.<\/p>\n
Andrew was arrested in early February by police investigating
\nmisconduct in public office and his home at Sandringham as well as
\nhis former residence at Royal Lodge were searched. He was later
\nreleased, after 11 hours of questioning, without charge but under
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
