Since 1975 when \u201cJaws\u201d redefined the Hollywood blockbuster, Steven Spielberg has led the film industry, mixing the serious and the smart, making films his way, without compromise. His latest film about aliens and UFOs, \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d arrives this week and rates as an excursion into his perhaps favorite field.<\/p>\n
After all, \u201cDisclosure\u201d is this filmmaker\u2019s fifth film on the subject. Impeccably cast \u2013 Emily Blunt, Josh O\u2019Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo star \u2013 \u201cDisclosure\u201d is notable for Spielberg\u2019s screen credit for coming up with the \u201caliens are here\u201d story.\u00a0\u00a0David Koepp, a frequent collaborator, scripted.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s apparent that science fiction occupies a truly special place in the director\u2019s psyche. Extravagantly productive for over 50 years as a director-producer, Spielberg is officially credited for writing or story on just six movies with half sci-fi.<\/p>\n
The sci-fi Spielberg began spectacularly, when he conceived, wrote and directed 1977\u2019s \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind,\u201d the first movie he made after \u201cJaws.\u201d And it was the first movie where he had the clout to do it exactly his way.<\/p>\n
It was an enormous gamble. And it paid off in the same year that saw \u201cStar Wars\u201d dominate every box-office list.<\/p>\n
As for what the third kind of encounter is, it refers to an astronomer\u2019s theory that the third kind is when a human is able to see an alien\/extraterrestrial up close.<\/p>\n
In 1982\u00a0Spielberg\u00a0made another career-defining hit, \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.\u201d The story, which he developed with two screenwriters, is about an alien stranded on Earth, befriended by a lonely boy, hidden by the suburban kids who have bonded with and want to protect E.T.\u00a0\u00a0It leads to what can only be described as a magical conclusion.<\/p>\n
Spielberg\u2019s \u201cA.I. Artificial Intelligence\u201d in 2001 has a bizarre origin story. Stanley Kubrick, the legendary filmmaker behind \u201c2001\u201d \u2014 he was also a special effects pioneer \u2014 had the rights to a short story about a boy who is an android. After years of development with various screenwriters and believing no child actor could play the role, Kubrick passed the rights to Spielberg.<\/p>\n
Inspired by Brian Aldiss\u2019 short story \u201cSupertoys Last All Summer Long,\u201d with a story credit going to Ian Watson who had worked for Kubrick,\u00a0Spielberg, taking the screenplay credit, created a chilly, perhaps anti-E.T. alien movie starring Haley Joel Osment, the \u201cI see dead people\u201d child star of \u201cThe Sixth Sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his final sci-fi entry until \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d\u00a0Spielberg\u00a0teamed up with box-office titan Tom Cruise for a no-brainer remake of H.G. Wells\u2019 classic \u201cWar of the Worlds.\u201d It was a period when both needed to rekindle a bit of box-office clout, if not prestige.<\/p>\n
The1953 Hollywood version, also a hit, was set during the Cold War. Spielberg\u2019s take emphasized post-9\/11 dread.<\/p>\n
