Jennifer Lopez <\/b><\/a>has a hot take about life in the Big Apple.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to be born in New York to be a New Yorker,\u201d Lopez, 56, said during a Thursday, June 4, interview on the \u201cSubway Takes\u201d TikTok<\/span><\/a> account. \u201cYes, I know everybody wants to claim the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cEverybody wants to claim our city, but you have to be born in New York. You have to be born in one of the five boroughs to be a New Yorker.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez, affectionately known as \u201cJenny from the block,\u201d<\/a> was born and raised in the New York borough of the Bronx.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJennifer Lopez is opening up about fighting Latina stereotypes during the early days of her career. \u201cThere\u2019s so many different people living their stories [in America],\u201d Lopez, 55, said during the Thursday, November 28, episode of the \u201cVariety Awards Circuit\u201d podcast. \u201cThat was always my goal as an actor, as a producer, was to kind [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSubway Takes\u201d host Kareem Rahma<\/b>, however, countered that he was told NYC residents can claim the city after a decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I moved here in 2012, everyone was like, \u2018In 10 years, you can call yourself a New Yorker,\u2019\u201d Rahma, 39, pointed out in rebuttal. \u201cThen, I stayed 10 years. \u2026 The New Yorkers used to have this as a rule.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez argued that she never heard about such a \u201crule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a rule? I didn\u2019t get the memo,\u201d she stated. \u201cI did not sign the petition. \u2026 You live in New York, you take on characteristics of New Yorkers, probably, by [50 years here], you have a New York sensibility, you pay New York taxes, [but] when you\u2019re born in New York<\/a>, that\u2019s when you\u2019re a New Yorker.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Office Romance <\/i>actress added, \u201cI said what I said, and I meant it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez\u2019s position soon raised eyebrows from social media users.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am you have lived outside of New York longer than you lived in it,\u201d one TikTok commenter replied, referring to Lopez\u2019s current residence in Los Angeles<\/a>, as another chimed in, \u201cComing from J. Lo is kind of hilarious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other social media users agreed with Rahma that a 10-year residency qualifies as \u201cNew Yorker\u201d status.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarrie Bradshaw made this claim, 10 years qualifies as a New Yorker,\u201d a TikToker wrote, referring to the Sex and the City <\/i>protagonist. \u201cI got 40 years in this town. I\u2019m a New Yorker.\u201d<\/p>\n

A fourth noted, \u201cI think if you lived in NY for [the]majority of your life you\u2019re a New Yorker.\u201d<\/p>\n
