Scary Movie <\/em>screamed its way to No. 1 at the weekend box office, with a $55 million domestic take and $105.5 million haul globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n That domestic figure is nearly double what Masters of the Universe <\/em>achieved in its premiere and what Backrooms <\/em>raised in its third weekend in theaters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Next weekend, all three titles will have to contend with Steven Spielberg’s return to the alien film genre, Disclosure Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Though Scary Movie<\/em><\/a> took first place at the box office<\/a> this weekend, it was movies themselves that won big.<\/p>\n The long-awaited sixth entry<\/a> in the horror parody franchise declared victory with a much wider margin than was predicted by most box office prognosticators. Scary Movie <\/em>earned $55 million domestically and $105.5 globally, per box office tracker Comscore. That’s higher than any previous film in the franchise, and nearly double what its closest competition was able to manage.<\/p>\n Masters of the Universe<\/em><\/a>, the second live-action, feature adaptation of Mattel’s multimedia fantasy franchise, was projected by many in a neck-and-neck race with Scary Movie<\/em>. But the film starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba decisively landed at No. 2 domestically and globally, with $29.3 million and $54.3 million grosses, respectively. That marks a significantly worrying start for MGM and Mattel, who hoped for something close to a Barbie <\/em>repeat at the box office, investing anywhere from $170 million to $200 million in Masters<\/em>, according to estimates.<\/p>\n At No. 3, 20-year-old breakout auteur Kane Parsons’ Backrooms<\/em><\/a> scared up $25.9 million domestically and $50.1 million globally. But that’s after three weeks in the theaters. The conceptual shocker based on deep internet lore was made on a $10 million budget (minus A24’s significant marketing and promotional budget), and currently sits at $212.6 million globally.<\/p>\n
