Americana Highways<\/em> is hosting this premiere of Brennan Gilmore\u2019s song \u201cNew Sudan\u201d from his forthcoming album My Name is Daniel Leek<\/em>.\u00a0The album was recorded at the Galax, Virginia home of Dori Freeman and Nick Falk (Caamp), who co-produced the album.<\/p>\n \u201cNew Sudan\u201d is Brennan Gilmore on acoustic guitars, mandolin, and vocals; Davina Jackson on vocals; Rob Hubbard on drums and vocals; Nate Leath on fiddle; Sam Howard on upright bass; and Bryan Holmes on organ.\u00a0<\/p>\n As Brennan tells us about the song, \u201cWhile many of the songs on My Name is Daniel Leek<\/em> are more lyrically impressionistic and abstract, \u201cNew Sudan\u201d is a story song in the ballad tradition, quite literal in telling of Daniel\u2019s flight into refuge. It purposefully follows \u201cMama Played the Snare Drum\u201d on the record, a similarly more literal account of Daniel\u2019s youth before the war.<\/p>\n Brennan spent years abroad including in civil upheaval areas of Africa, only to return home to uncomfortably similar unrest, which, difficult as it is to face, served as material for this fabulous album. About the album, Brennan\u2019s bio describes \u201cthe America Gilmore returned to felt uncomfortably familiar, with echoes of the borders, fault lines and conflicts he had spent years negotiating abroad. The album is a meditation on the unity, darkness and hope of both worlds.\u201d \u00a0This song recounts a young man facing the prospects of being forced to fight in a war. Rich with stringed instruments \u2013 fiddle, mandolin, guitars \u2013 and an energy building: \u201c Oh my sister where are you now?
