Summer is nearly here, and for all devout reality TV fans, that means another drama-filled season of \u201cLove Island USA\u201d is well underway and taking over social media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
In recent years, each installment of the hit American dating spinoff has become something of a phenomenon in its own right, spawning beloved friendships and fan-favorite couples that have quickly become the talk of the fandom and beyond. Yet for all the sparks flying in the villa, the conversation around Peacock\u2019s biggest reality TV hit has increasingly shifted from romance to controversy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
For Season 8, the drama began before \u201cLove Island USA\u201d even returned to our screens June 2. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Days ahead of the premiere, contestant Vasana Montgomery came under scrutiny after videos resurfaced online showing her using the N-word. Following the backlash, she was removed from the cast shortly after it was announced and was not mentioned during the season premiere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
On Wednesday, Montgomery addressed the controversy publicly for the first time in a statement shared on her Instagram Stories that began, \u201cI wanted to address a couple of videos from my teen years that have recently resurfaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cIn those videos, I used a racial slur. There is no excuse for it, and I am deeply sorry,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI am embarrassed and disappointed by my words. I take full responsibility for what I said and understand why it has hurt and upset people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Montgomery went on to say that she has \u201cgrown a lot as a person\u201d since those videos were recorded \u201cand taken the time to educate myself, listen, learn, and better understand the impact that language can have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThat growth does not erase my mistake, and I am not asking anyone to excuse it,\u201d she continued. \u201cI believe people should be held accountable for their actions, but I also believe in growing, learning, and becoming better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cTo anyone I hurt or disappointed, I am truly sorry,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n That\u2019s not the only drama unfolding outside the villa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Contestant Sean Reifel also caught flak after joining the Season 8 cast, though not from the \u201cLove Island USA\u201d fandom.
