It\u2019s been years since Percy has seen Sam or returned to this quaint community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Year After\u201d implies that she left and stayed away under hurtful circumstances, but the story takes its time showing what happened.\u00a0And, like many shows that orient themselves around a \u201cbig reveal,\u201d it\u2019s underwhelming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Abigail Cowen as Delilah in \u201cEvery Year After.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Justine Yeung\/Prime Video<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Joseph Chiu as Jordie in \u201cEvery Year After.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Cate Cameron\/Prime<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She\u2019s reconnecting with old friends that she\u2019s been estranged from, which includes Sam, his chaotic brother Charlie (Michael Bradway), her old friend \u2013 or frenemy \u2013 Delilah (Abigail Cowen), and Sam\u2019s other bud, Jordie (Joseph Chiu).\u00a0Percy\u2019s lawyer pal from the city, Chantal (Aurora Perrineau), also accompanies her for moral support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Prime Video\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/11\/entertainment\/the-next-heated-rivalry-is-here-with-off-campus-review\/\">other recent hit, \u201cOff Campus,\u201d <\/a>had the energy of a CW show, \u201cEvery Year After\u201d feels like an ABC Family show \u2013 before their rebrand as Freeform, in an effort to sound more mature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The writing, acting, and production values of \u201cEvery Year After\u201d are cheesy and melodramatic, like a Hallmark or Lifetime movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOff Campus\u201d was charming enough to get away with a sprinkling of that tone.\u00a0This show isn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Matt Cornett as Sam Florek in \u201cEvery Year After.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Cate Cameron\/Prime<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Matt Cornett as Sam Florek, Sadie Soverall as Percy Fraser in \u201cEvery Year After.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Cate Cameron\/Prime<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even when it tries to steer into relationship angst, the whole thing feels amateur and insipid.<\/p>\n<p>Percy has a voiceover that tries to sound profound \u2013 for instance, as characters swim in a lake, her voiceover describes them as, \u201ccreatures of the lake, not born of it, but made for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attempts to be faux-deep are painfully try-hard. It feels like a 14-year-old trying to impress their writing teacher.<\/p>\n<p>It also doesn\u2019t help that Sam has all the charisma of a wet dishrag.\u00a0As the show tries to build the mystery of what happened to fracture his relationship with Percy in the past, it\u2019s hard to feel invested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the show unfolds, you get the sense that the story chose the wrong leading man. His brother Charlie would be more interesting to build a story around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Michael Bradway as Charlie Florek in \u201cEvery Year After.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Justine Yeung\/Prime Video<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sadie Soverall as Percy Fraser, Matt Cornett as Sam Florek in \u201cEvery Year After.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Cate Cameron\/Prime<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The show also has copious flashbacks to Percy and Sam\u2019s youth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/12\/entertainment\/wuthering-heights-kennedys-and-why-pop-culture-cant-quit-toxic-romance-we-all-love-a-train-wreck\/\">2026 \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d movie <\/a>was controversial, but it did a great job of telling a love story that began when the characters met as kids. It found excellent young actors, and the scenes added to the story without overstaying their welcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The childhood scenes between Sam and Percy in \u201cEvery Year After\u201d are tedious and don\u2019t add much to the story. Every time one pops up, it takes away the momentum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The show isn\u2019t all bad. Charlie and Delilah are like the Jokers of the show, infusing it with some much-needed personality.\u00a0Chantal isn\u2019t just \u201cthe friend\u201d who is pushed to the sidelines.
