In theaters June 12.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Neither, actually. \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d hews closer to \u201cMinority Report,\u201d with a man on the run from menacing forces.<\/p>\n<p>There is no extraterrestrial invasion, fleet of space ships or laser weapons as in \u201cThe War of the Worlds.\u201d Unlike \u201cE.T.,\u201d an adorable martian is not featured as a main character.<\/p>\n<p>This nonetheless exciting sci-fi film is about a whistleblower who knows too much and is fighting to expose the greatest coverup in history. Kinda like \u201cThe Post!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All that said, \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d is not a serious imagining of how humanity will discover that there\u2019s life on other planets \u2014\u00a0a\u00a0la\u00a0Denis Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cArrival.\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s Spielberg having big, bouncy, creative, strange fun. For starters, telepathy plays a major part.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>OK, I guess it isn\u2019t totally different from \u201cCrystal Skull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp, in a unique spin, have taken the U.S. Government out of the mix. No sweaty Oval Office phone calls or swarms of FBI agents here either.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, a private data security company in Virginia called Wardex is charged with protecting the secret that little green men have visited Earth many times. The idea is that presidential power can change over every four years, so this consequential knowledge needs to be kept somewhere safe and consistent. Wardex conceals video evidence spanning eight decades \u2014 Roswell included \u2014 and powerful, mysterious artifacts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Emily Blunt stars as Margaret in \u201cDisclosure Day.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not for long. A fed-up employee named Daniel (Josh O\u2019Connor) steals all that info and heads off with his girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson) to reveal the truth alongside other Wardex defectors, including Colman Domingo\u2019s Hugo. They\u2019re chased by his boss Noah, a role that lets Colin Firth snarlingly go full villain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistory doesn\u2019t have a reset key,\u201d he tells Daniel, sensitively played by O\u2019Connor. \u201cIf you do this, there\u2019s no undoing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel picks the red pill.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A whistleblower named Daniel (Josh O\u2019Connor) plans to expose the existence of aliens. <span class=\"credit\">Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Westward in Kansas City, Missouri, is Margaret (Emily Blunt), a TV meteorologist who dreams of becoming an anchor. The same day Daniel vamooses, she begins speaking in fluent Russian to her husband (Wyatt Russell) out of nowhere and is suddenly able to read minds. During a traffic stop, she all but goes, \u201cThese are not the droids you\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, on air, Margaret\u2019s mouth starts rapidly clicking \u2014 the aliens\u2019 language, wouldn\u2019t you know \u2014 and she dramatically passes out. The clip goes viral and Wardex is now on the hunt for her, too.<\/p>\n<p>Blunt, better all the time, is magnificent as a confused yet determined woman whose brain becomes out of her control. She goes into medium-like trances, speaking at a rapid pace, only to leap back to her neurotic, oddball self seconds later. Easy to love, she\u2019s Holly Hunter in \u201cBroadcast News\u201d by way of \u201cThe X-Files.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Alien artificats and telepathy play a major role in Spielberg\u2019s film. <span class=\"credit\">Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Spielberg and Koepp\u2019s story is an original one, and so what Daniel and Margaret are doing and the nature of who they really are unravels grippingly, even when a plot device or piece of dialogue is clunky. <\/p>\n<p>Some of the wobblier bits: America is days away from World War III with North Korea, and Domingo gets some philosophizing monologues that could\u2019ve been written by a high college kid. Spielberg keeps his movie at a sprint, so the rough portions are quickly forgotten. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once we have the pair\u2019s backstories mostly figured out, the filmmakers throw in enough weird details to keep \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d feeling new. Animals are used cleverly, though their CGI could be a lot better. Alien tech lets evil Noah track down Daniel and Jane with his mind. And a few suppressed memories are essential to the future of the planet.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A stunt involving a car and moving train is one of Spielberg\u2019s best. <span class=\"credit\">Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s all set to an old-school John Williams score, grand though not upbeat,\u00a0that nostalgically brings to mind Indy and his dad escaping a Nazi castle in \u201cThe Last Crusade.\u201d At 94 years old, Williams continues to understand what movie magic sounds like better than anybody who\u2019s come after him\u00a0or likely will. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That same innate knack for casting a blockbuster spell remains true of 79-year-old Spielberg,\u00a0who\u2019s recently focused on prestige dramas such as \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/11\/the-fabelmans-review-spielbergs-latest-is-the-best-of-the-year\/\">The Fabelmans<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/02\/west-side-story-review-spielberg-does-decent-job-with-classic\/\">West Side Story<\/a>.\u201d The man has such a great time making films, and his enthusiasm pours out of every shot. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Josh O\u2019Connor stars in \u201cDisclosure Day.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He\u00a0has especially outdone himself with one spectacular stunt involving a train and a car. It\u2019s real-looking to the point of being scary, and is right up there not only with his best locomotive sequences but his best action set pieces ever.<\/p>\n<p>Williams hasn\u2019t retired yet.
