They were reworking older material that you hear on this show. So it\u2019s a new Grateful Dead, and it sounds phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the 50th anniversary Thursday, fans can relive the night in the venue where it went down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former Boston Music Hall, now the Boch Center Wang Theatre, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bochcenter.org\/events\/detail\/gdcelebration\">will host a night of music<\/a> featuring New England Dead tribute band<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ivoryeightyeights.wixsite.com\/playingdead\"> Playing Dead,<\/a> with former members of Dark Star Orchestra, Slipknot!, and Uncle John\u2019s Band.\u00a0 The show \u201cincludes a performance of the complete second set from the Dead\u2019s Boston Music Hall concert,\u201d per billing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ll pour the Grateful Dead\u2019s official brews, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/untappd.com\/b\/dogfish-head-craft-brewery-grateful-dead-juicy-pale-ale\/6155812\">Grateful Dead Juicy Pale Ale<\/a> and<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/untappd.com\/b\/dogfish-head-craft-brewery-grateful-dead-citrus-daydream-lager\/6604905\"> Grateful Dead Citrus Daydream Lager\u00a0<\/a>from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonbeer.com\/beer-and-beyond\/dogfish-head\">Boston Beer Company\u2019s Dogfish Head<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew England Deadheads are a rabid bunch, in a good way,\u201d Lemieux<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/community\/entertainment\/2026\/04\/22\/the-grateful-dead-just-released-a-5-lp-box-set-of-a-particular-classic-boston-concert-heres-why\/\"> said<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cI love talking Grateful Dead with New England Deadheads. They always have so much insight, and so many good memories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lemieux called 6\/11\/76 \u201cacoustic perfection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What made it so special? In part, the freshness. The Dead had, for the most part, stopped touring in the fall of 1974.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn June of \u201976 they hit the road for theater shows \u2014 no arenas, no stadiums, no Wall of Sound [their famously enormous sound system]. They had a lot of new material. They were reworking older material that you hear on this show. So it\u2019s a new Grateful Dead, and it sounds phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, Mickey Hart \u2014 former Celtic Bill Walton\u2019s best pal \u2014\u00a0 who left the band in \u201971, was back, \u201cwhich was cool because it meant they had to do new arrangements of certain songs,\u201d Lemieux said. \u201cWhat Mickey brought to the band was essential to the 1976 sound. It\u2019s one of my favorite years of the Dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Tickets $35; VIP $76. He\u2019s often barefoot,<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DIhI_PczLbX\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\"> laughing<\/a> or grinning, sometimes smiling with his eyes closed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/arts\/2019\/03\/14\/how-mike-gordon-band-member-complements-mike-gordon-band-leader\/Ekqu2pts3TiRAYeBl8mXfJ\/story.html?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\"> Phish\u2019s Mike Gordon<\/a>, of Sudbury, who recommended Burbidge first join Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann\u2019s trio, BK3.\u00a0 The rest, the two-time Grammy winner told me previously, became a \u201cfairy tale that seems like it can\u2019t be true. It has all these<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/dead-and-company-sphere-2024-billboard-1548.jpg?w=942&amp;h=623&amp;crop=1\"> magical people<\/a> in it. And there\u2019s<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com\/newburyportnews.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/8\/80\/8806cb1c-f753-54aa-a2e0-810ef1eec857\/6655f65a3179b.image.png?resize=333,500\"> a giant<\/a>. Then you realize: It <em>is<\/em> true. It<em> is <\/em>magical.
