A new nonprofit organization<\/a> is\u00a0seeking\u00a0to expand access to music education<\/a> in Rochester<\/a>\u2018s charter schools<\/a> while drawing attention to a longstanding funding disparity<\/a> between charter and district-operated schools.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the organization, Rochester charter schools receive\u00a0roughly\u00a0$20,809\u00a0less per student than district schools,\u00a0equating to\u00a0roughly 42\u00a0cents for every dollar spent on students in traditional public schools. Charter school leaders argue that disparity has limited their ability to offer programs that many students elsewhere take for granted, including music education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf the 9,200 charter school students, roughly 30% of the city\u2019s\u00a0public school<\/a>\u00a0population, we estimate fewer than 2,000 are meaningfully engaged in music education,\u201d said Joe Klein<\/a>, chair of the Sound Foundations board and a longtime advocate for urban education. \u201cOur mission to champion investment in public charter school music programs will combat the pervasive and harmful underfunding of charter school students in Rochester.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The nonprofit describes itself as a coalition of educators, funders, school leaders, parents, students,\u00a0musicians\u00a0and community partners working together to expand opportunities for young people\u00a0through music.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several Rochester-area charter schools have already\u00a0participated\u00a0in pilot programs funded by Sound Foundations, with school leaders reporting positive results.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound Foundations is currently reviewing applications for the 2026-27 school year<\/a>. Funding may support in-school music instruction, group ensembles, instrument purchases or rentals, sound production\u00a0initiatives\u00a0and other music-related programming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Participating schools will track attendance, behavior, academic\u00a0performance\u00a0and other metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of funded programs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
