The Princess Royal, 75, told fellow
\nOlympians<\/a> that she cannot remember the cross-country phase of
\nthe 1976 Montreal Olympics, despite the event becoming one of the
\ndefining moments of her life.<\/p>\nAnne became the first member of the Royal Family to compete at
\nthe Olympic Games when she represented Great Britain in the
\nequestrian three-day event aboard Goodwill, a horse owned by her
\nmother, Queen Elizabeth II.<\/p>\n
However, during the demanding cross-country section of the
\ncompetition, the King\u2019s sister suffered a concussion after falling
\nwhen Goodwill became stuck in mud while attempting a jump.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a special reunion marking 50 years since the
\nMontreal Olympics, Anne admitted the incident left her with a
\ncomplete memory gap.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a slight problem in that the bit I would like to
\nremember, which is the cross country, I don\u2019t,\u201d she told
\nguests.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut every now and again I see it and think \u2018oh ok\u2019. I suspect
\nGoodwill remembers it, but I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her comments prompted laughter from the audience of former Team
\nGB athletes gathered at London\u2019s exclusive Lansdowne Club.<\/p>\n
At the time of the accident, Anne won widespread admiration for
\nremounting and continuing the course despite her injuries.<\/p>\n
Yet the princess later revealed that she had little recollection
\nof doing so.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on the aftermath of the fall, she previously joked:
\n\u201cCome on, be fair, I was put back on!\u201d<\/p>\n
She also memorably described the effects of the concussion by
\nsaying: \u201cThe lights were on, but there was no one at home.\u201d<\/p>\n
The reunion brought together athletes who represented Great
\nBritain at both the Summer and Winter Olympics in 1976.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Anne noted that while the milestone
\ninevitably highlighted the passage of time, many of her former
\nteammates looked remarkably well.<\/p>\n
The princess described the Games as an experience she still
\nvalued despite the accident.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was an experience, and a lot of it was a good experience,\u201d
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
Anne concluded her speech by praising the enduring friendships
\nand shared experiences created through Olympic competition.<\/p>\n
The Princess Royal enjoyed an accomplished equestrian career
\nlong before her Olympic appearance. She won individual gold at the
\nEuropean Eventing Championships in 1971 and was named BBC Sports
\nPersonality of the Year that same year.<\/p>\n
Her sporting legacy was later continued by her daughter, Zara
\nTindall, who won a silver medal for Team GB in eventing at the
\nLondon 2012 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
The Montreal Games also became a family occasion for Anne, who
\nwas watched by Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and her brothers,
\nthen-Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.<\/p>\n
