For someone who protested too much at the top about how she\u2019s not a fan of overly spicy food, PinkPantheress<\/a> easily worked her way up the Scoville scale on her Hot Ones appearance this week. In fact, she was so chill she had time to praise host Sean Evans for his thoughtful, deeply researched questions and ask him about his taste in British music while hardly breaking a sweat.<\/p>\n Halfway through her heat challenge, the 25-year-old Canterbury, U.K. native did admit, however, that when she started her career seven years ago she never imagined she\u2019d still be burning up the charts today. \u201cWhen I first started, I remember being told, \u2018your career isn\u2019t gonna be a one or two year, it should be a 10-year career.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018oh really?,’\u201d she recalled thinking. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to make it even five years by the way. I didn\u2019t, but we\u2019re still here. And I\u2019m on Hot Ones.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n The \u201cBoy\u2019s a Liar\u201d singer boasted that her half-Kenyan heritage makes her \u201cnot unfamiliar with spice,\u201d while fessing up that when she visits the popular South African chicken restaurant chain Nando\u2019s she goes for the mildest Peri Tamer sauce, even as she stared down the formidable row of progressively scorching sauces in front of her.<\/p>\n Though she\u2019s been open about struggling with stage fright in the past, the singer said she\u2019s gotten much more confident and in the groove on stage over the past year or so, mostly because she realized she has to be the one in charge of the energy flow. \u201cWhen I used to perform on stage I would act as if the audience were in charge. So I would let them dictate how I perform,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n \u201cSo if they weren\u2019t enjoying it, I\u2019d be like, \u2018oh they\u2019re not enjoying it, I\u2019m not going to go out there.\u2019 But then as time went on, I think somebody once basically drilled into my head that I have to be the person that dictates them, not the other way around,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd so even when you are on stage and you\u2019re like everybody jump, like they jump. So it\u2019s like you literally can just like you just need to own it.\u201d<\/p>\n After gamely building her ultimate imaginary \u201cperfect singer songwriter\u201d \u2014 Lily Allen\u2019s, melodies, Frou Frou\u2019s beats and Chief Keef\u2019s rule-breaking \u2014\u00a0Pantheress said she doesn\u2019t think a songwriter has to have experienced everything they sing about, though pilfering other people\u2019s stories is a no-go. \u201cThat being said, I don\u2019t think you should appropriate any stories that \u2026 I don\u2019t think we need to sing about everything,\u201d she said, citing SZA\u2019s \u201cKill Bill\u201d as an example.<\/p>\n \u201cObviously she [SZA] didn\u2019t kill her \u2014 I just think I love storytelling in such an abstract way. I have a song about drowning in a bathtub,\u201d she noted about her 2023 Heaven Knows track \u201cOphelia.\u201d That prompted host Evans to wonder if she had actually drowned in a tub. \u201cWell, you don\u2019t know that,\u201d Pantheress said with a cheeky smile.<\/p>\n For the record, she was doing fine until she tried \u201cDa Bomb,\u201d (Scoville level 135,600), which sent her fishing for a glass of water, ice to chew on and a cup of ice cream after Evans sweetly reminded her not to touch her eyes with her sauce-covered fingers.
