Thailand\u2019s Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest child of King
\nVajiralongkorn and a prominent figure within the royal family, has
\ndied aged 47 after spending more than three years in a coma.<\/p>\n
The Royal Household Bureau announced that the princess died on
\nThursday evening at Bangkok\u2019s Chulalongkorn Hospital, where she had
\nbeen receiving intensive treatment since suffering a sudden medical
\nemergency in late 2022.<\/p>\n
Princess Bajrakitiyabha collapsed while exercising with her dogs
\nin December 2022. Doctors later said she had experienced a severe
\ncardiac event linked to a mycoplasma infection that caused a
\nserious heart rhythm disorder. Despite extensive treatment and
\nconstant medical supervision, her condition never improved
\nsignificantly.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the palace said medical specialists had provided
\nthe highest level of care available but her health had continued to
\ndeteriorate.<\/p>\n
Known widely in Thailand as Princess Pa, she was born on 7
\nDecember 1978 to the then Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn and Princess
\nSoamsawali. She went on to become one of the most respected and
\naccomplished members of the royal family, earning a reputation for
\npublic service, legal expertise and international diplomacy.<\/p>\n
After studying law in Thailand, she obtained postgraduate
\nqualifications, including a doctorate, from Cornell University in
\nthe United States. She subsequently worked for Thailand\u2019s
\nAttorney-General\u2019s Office before moving into diplomatic
\nservice.<\/p>\n
Between 2012 and 2014 she served as Thailand\u2019s ambassador to
\nAustria and held concurrent diplomatic responsibilities for
\nSlovenia and Slovakia. During her time in Europe, she worked
\nclosely with international organisations, particularly on issues
\nrelating to criminal justice and the rule of law.<\/p>\n
Returning to Thailand, Princess Bajrakitiyabha became an
\nadvocate for prison reform and the rights of female inmates.
\nThrough charitable initiatives and her work with the United Nations
\nOffice on Drugs and Crime, she sought to improve conditions for
\nvulnerable women within the justice system.<\/p>\n
Her public responsibilities expanded further in later years. In
\n2021, King Vajiralongkorn appointed her chief of staff within his
\npersonal military bodyguard unit, granting her the rank of general.
\nShe also represented Thailand in various international roles and
\nremained an active supporter of public health and sporting
\ninitiatives.<\/p>\n
The princess\u2019s death is likely to renew attention on the future
\nof Thailand\u2019s monarchy. Although succession discussions are highly
\nsensitive in the kingdom, Princess Bajrakitiyabha had long been
\nregarded by many observers as one of the royal family\u2019s most
\ncapable figures.<\/p>\n
King Vajiralongkorn, 73, has not formally designated an heir.
\nWhile traditional succession has generally favoured male
\ndescendants, constitutional provisions introduced in the 1970s
\nallow for the possibility of a female monarch.<\/p>\n
As news of her death spread, mourners gathered in Bangkok to pay
\ntheir respects. The Thai government is expected to announce a
\nperiod of national mourning in honour of the princess, whose death
\nmarks the loss of one of the kingdom\u2019s most prominent royal
