Photo by Miranda de Moraes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dozens of people braved a heatwave to attend the first activation of Redwood City\u2019s Entertainment Zone on Thursday afternoon, just in time for the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The zone is a pilot program that pairs outdoor drinking with live music, games and \u201cnew downtown experiences,\u201d according to the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDowntown Redwood City is already one of the Peninsula\u2019s most vibrant public spaces,\u201d said Mayor Elmer Mart\u00ednez Saballos. \u201cThe Entertainment Zone gives us another way to support local businesses, bring people together and create a welcoming experience on Broadway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eric Rodriguez, 33, was one enthusiastic attendee on June 11. Photo by Miranda de Moraes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors 21 and older may buy alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and drink it in designated cups within the zone, which covers part of the Broadway Pedestrian Mall and a stretch along Redwood Creek. Outside the zone, alcohol is not allowed, and drinks cannot be taken out of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jenny G\u00f3mez, also of Redwood City, visited the zone with her husband and 8-month-old baby. She said in Spanish that it\u2019s great for the kids, especially after grabbing something to eat and drink at nearby restaurants. Photo by Miranda de Moraes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the zone, there are jumbo Connect 4, Jenga and cornhole games, as well as a bubble machine, cocktail tables and live musicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amity Valentin, a mother of two who lives in San Mateo, only came to Redwood City for a pediatrician appointment that afternoon \u2014 or so she thought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her 7 and 9-year-old boys loved the games and toys, which she said was \u201cgreat for me\u201d because it was her kids\u2019 first day of summer, which can be challenging for parents looking to keep their kids entertained. Photo by Miranda de Moraes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the enthusiam, most of the restaurants were noticeably\u00a0 empty outside, which Mazra Host Karlie Cunha attributed to the activation\u2019s timing. She said guests usually don\u2019t come until after 4 p.m. on a weekday, and that\u2019s not to mention the fact that the heat was \u201cblazing\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redwood City\u2019s Center for Creativity participated in the inaugural activation by providing \u201cwatercolor resist\u201d art supplies to make paintings using oil pastels and watercolor paints.
