I mean, Sam, you were on set<\/p>\n
for Gracie’s cover shoot last week in LA.<\/p>\n
Can you guys tell me, set the scene,<\/p>\n
what was it like, what were the vibes?<\/p>\n
I’d love to and I’ll need Gracie’s help,<\/p>\n
but it was, in my opinion, best vibes.<\/p>\n
There was a heat wave, so we were all in it together.<\/p>\n
We had the best team.<\/p>\n
We had Larissa Hoffman, who I love,<\/p>\n
Jorden Bickham, who I love. Love.<\/p>\n
We had our female team coming through.<\/p>\n
Emmy and Tom\u00e1s- Yes, I mean, the best.<\/p>\n
I mean, Tom\u00e1s, tell me how you felt about it,<\/p>\n
’cause I had a blast. I mean, to be in LA<\/p>\n
was also quite nuts, having grown up there.<\/p>\n
I think because of how intimate the crew felt,<\/p>\n
it was always a trippy moment to pull back<\/p>\n
and realize what it was we were shooting and where,<\/p>\n
and also like that environment was so remarkable<\/p>\n
and really just the people make everything all the time.<\/p>\n
But what a nuts kind of bucket list.<\/p>\n
[Marley] And the setting was George Lucas’s amazing new,<\/p>\n
like narrative, I don’t know what it’s called.<\/p>\n
It’s the Lucas Museum<\/p>\n
of Narrative Art. Narrative Art, yeah.<\/p>\n
Okay, gorgeous. I was kept calling it<\/p>\n
the Museum of Storytelling-<\/p>\n
I’m sure you would agree if that’s also what it is.<\/p>\n
Yeah, I mean, what was amazing though was I feel like<\/p>\n
I’ve never been in such a big space in my life, like-<\/p>\n
I thought we had left- It’s like cavern.<\/p>\n
it’s like we left Earth. It does feel, you’re like,<\/p>\n
oh hello Mars.<\/p>\n
I’m just so excited for LA to have a museum like that.<\/p>\n
The design is incredible.<\/p>\n
I think 300,000 square feet.<\/p>\n
I mean, it’s unimaginable you enter.<\/p>\n
I’ve never been in a museum before it’s open before.<\/p>\n
You’re running through the museum<\/p>\n
safely. We got tacos that day.<\/p>\n
Got mariscos, have you ever had mariscos at East Coast?<\/p>\n
Oh, well, we’re<\/p>\n
flying to LA next time in LA.<\/p>\n

We wouldn’t have made it through the shoot without it.<\/p>\n
No. It was a real dream.<\/p>\n
That is so fun.<\/p>\n
I mean, we’re, for the audience,<\/p>\n
we are recording this a few months before the stories out,<\/p>\n
so we’re, you know, with bated breath<\/p>\n
waiting to see the story,<\/p>\n
but we’re very excited about it.<\/p>\n
Did you listen to any music on set?<\/p>\n
Yeah, we had Gaga.<\/p>\n
The fame, always.<\/p>\n
Always, and I think we like, we switched it up,<\/p>\n
we put some Tame Impala too and then at the end,<\/p>\n
like last shot, I was like, we’re going back to Gaga.<\/p>\n
Yeah, Sandy was like, we’re all like a little bit fading<\/p>\n
into the day by the end of the…<\/p>\n
Because also it was like heat advisory,<\/p>\n
like heat warning in LA, they were like,<\/p>\n
you know, don’t go outside, we were in the row in 95 degree.<\/p>\n
Anyway, but then it was just so funny<\/p>\n
there was some like ambient music<\/p>\n
and all of a sudden it’s like…<\/p>\n

I was like Yes, thank you Sammy.<\/p>\n
We got to hear a snippet of the new album<\/p>\n
which was very exciting. Thank you for listening.<\/p>\n
I mean, when do you kind of decide<\/p>\n
like how you want to sort of talk about<\/p>\n
what an album sort of is<\/p>\n
and how it kind of like fits into like,<\/p>\n
the sort of trajectory of your sort of works.<\/p>\n
I do feel like when you’re like doing press around<\/p>\n
like a project, you kind of have to be like,<\/p>\n
this is, you know,<\/p>\n
reflective of this kind of moment in my life.<\/p>\n
To me, I feel very present with whatever it is I’m writing<\/p>\n
and that like, you know, there wasn’t a single event<\/p>\n
that inspired a concept album in this case.<\/p>\n
I feel like I was surprised that as much music came<\/p>\n
as quickly after the last tour ended,<\/p>\n
you know, I wasn’t anticipating that.<\/p>\n
I didn’t feel like I had anything to say.<\/p>\n
And I think my nervous system was really<\/p>\n
like settling into what life off-tour feels like.<\/p>\n
It had been four years of a straight push.<\/p>\n
Oh my God. Yeah and like,<\/p>\n
I think when you’re in it,<\/p>\n
I’m sure you guys feel this way with what you do<\/p>\n
which requires like 24\/7 attention<\/p>\n
in a way that I cannot even imagine.<\/p>\n
But there’s like you don’t realize what,<\/p>\n
how your nervous system is kind of like running<\/p>\n
until you’d stop, which like, never happens.<\/p>\n
And then, but when it does, you’re like, Whoa!<\/p>\n
I feel like being absolutely silent.<\/p>\n
So, I had no plans in this case to like jump in<\/p>\n
as quickly as we ended up doing it.<\/p>\n
But my collaborator, producer, dear friend Aaron Dessner,<\/p>\n
who I’ve worked with for six years now, he has superpowers.<\/p>\n
And kind of whenever we’re in the same room,<\/p>\n
even if I do feel like silent to my core,<\/p>\n
whenever he starts playing something,<\/p>\n
it like sparks my imagination.<\/p>\n
And therefore, when we got together<\/p>\n
to kind of just throw something at the wall,<\/p>\n
so much came out<\/p>\n
and it felt like a really quite accurate reflection of,<\/p>\n
I guess, just being in my mid-20s.<\/p>\n
And, you know, I think like being in your 20s<\/p>\n
is famously that sort of in between space<\/p>\n
where like one foot is in your adolescence still<\/p>\n
and another is sort of in the future a bit.<\/p>\n
And this album when I think about,<\/p>\n
because you two are like some of the first people<\/p>\n
I’m talking about it, you know, with at all,<\/p>\n
just like so I’m kind of still figuring out<\/p>\n
the vocabulary I guess around it.<\/p>\n
I’m looking at this album as like I am the sum<\/p>\n
of all my parts and these are the parts<\/p>\n
that I was this year, I guess.<\/p>\n
What I was talking to Marley,<\/p>\n
when Marley asked how I was feeling about the album,<\/p>\n
I think that in between,<\/p>\n
I think that’s an amazing way to talk about it<\/p>\n
because I think that’s why so many,<\/p>\n
that’s why I relate to it.<\/p>\n
You get that feeling perfectly<\/p>\n
of something can look one way, it can turn out one way,<\/p>\n
but how you’re feeling inside and feeling like,<\/p>\n
you wish something would have worked out<\/p>\n
because it would have been easier.<\/p>\n
But unfortunately, you couldn’t.<\/p>\n
And so, but then you make it fun and I know you do-<\/p>\n
Maybe sometimes, maybe once or twice it’s fun.<\/p>\n
No, you like, you find a very smart clever way<\/p>\n
to talk about it, we’re like,<\/p>\n
it didn’t actually go that way and I was in a lot of pain,<\/p>\n
but actually it’s gonna be okay,<\/p>\n
like you- But, Ha-ha.<\/p>\n
Exactly. No, I do think,<\/p>\n
I think like there’s there’s theme,<\/p>\n
there’s lots of different themes I think there’s like,<\/p>\n
you know, like the falling in love and heartache and like,<\/p>\n
you know, regret and I think like age now<\/p>\n
that comes with just enough reflection to be like, Hmm.<\/p>\n
You know, just looking in the mirror a bit.<\/p>\n
I know you work with Aaron a lot,<\/p>\n
but is there anyone once you’re working with him<\/p>\n
who you’re sending for feedback?<\/p>\n
Is there anyone else you look to,<\/p>\n
even though you’re not working with,<\/p>\n
but just to be like, Oh, I know your POV.<\/p>\n
For sure.<\/p>\n
I feel like, well, historically,<\/p>\n
when Audrey Hobart and I lived together,<\/p>\n
when we were making The Secret of Us together,<\/p>\n
like she was my first, you know,<\/p>\n
it’s like run downstairs and be like,<\/p>\n
Do we like this idea?<\/p>\n
So that was such a gift to have my dearest friend<\/p>\n
and my roommate be the person whose, you know,<\/p>\n
opinion and taste I trust and respect the most.<\/p>\n
Like that was amazing.<\/p>\n
And similarly now, Paul’s like constantly,<\/p>\n
I’m just like, Thoughts?<\/p>\n
Thoughts on this one?<\/p>\n
You know what I mean? So that’s a joy for sure.<\/p>\n
I think, you know, other than Aaron,<\/p>\n
I’ll send a demo to my mom.<\/p>\n
Like, do we hate it, you know?<\/p>\n
But otherwise, I’ve never really been like,<\/p>\n
I’ve never been like a cast a wide net.<\/p>\n
You’re really good about bringing people<\/p>\n
that you love into your world to work with.<\/p>\n
And so, when these people you’re talking about,<\/p>\n
you know the feedback,<\/p>\n
you’re going to care about their feedback.<\/p>\n
So I love that.<\/p>\n
It’s people you’ll… I feel like feedback<\/p>\n
is so crucial, but I do think in this time,<\/p>\n
it’s like, for all of us because of the internet,<\/p>\n
like it’s unavoidable.<\/p>\n
We’re living in a time where,<\/p>\n
you know, nothing goes uncommented on.<\/p>\n
Which like is also like our First Amendment right.<\/p>\n
So I’m like, let’s go.<\/p>\n
However, I do think it’s important that like, you know,<\/p>\n
as regardless of the scale it’s on<\/p>\n
in terms of like perception, et cetera.<\/p>\n
It’s like, I do think it’s important<\/p>\n
to internalize feedback and really respect<\/p>\n
and honor feedback you’re getting from people<\/p>\n
who are invested truly in your personal growth<\/p>\n
and like evolution and not for the sake<\/p>\n
of like burying you in a hole and wanting you to like suffer<\/p>\n
on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
You know what I’m saying?<\/p>\n
No, indeed. I agree.<\/p>\n
Do you know what I mean? I’m like, so I love feedback.<\/p>\n
I’m like, bring it.<\/p>\n
I’m the same, but I just go to safe circle.<\/p>\n
Where I’m like, I can handle the feedback.<\/p>\n
Exactly, exactly.<\/p>\n
Totally, yeah.<\/p>\n
I mean, you are someone who has historically<\/p>\n
sort of teased, like you put out sort of snippets,<\/p>\n
of music that you’re working on<\/p>\n
and sort of shared that with the community<\/p>\n
that you’ve built online, which is so devoted to you.<\/p>\n
I mean, the nice ones are so devoted in such a sweet way,<\/p>\n
you know, as you were saying.<\/p>\n
When you have done that, was kind of the feedback<\/p>\n
that you were getting sort of directional?<\/p>\n
Was this idea to just kind of be like,<\/p>\n
I am in the studio, I’m working on things,<\/p>\n
like things are happening.<\/p>\n
Like, what were you kind of seeking in those moments<\/p>\n
when you were sort of teasing things?<\/p>\n
I think when I started posting snippets years<\/p>\n
and years and years ago,<\/p>\n
was like just another outlet for me.<\/p>\n
And I think because I didn’t really think about the internet<\/p>\n
as like another place that you are performing.<\/p>\n
To me, it was just, you know,<\/p>\n
I didn’t have to face anyone actually.<\/p>\n
Like it initially was just somewhere for me<\/p>\n
to kind of vlog these things.<\/p>\n
And then as people somehow stumbled across my songs<\/p>\n
and would, you know, yeah, comment<\/p>\n
and let me know that they had been through something similar<\/p>\n
or that it resonated with them for whatever reason.<\/p>\n
I then felt like it was this beautiful relationship<\/p>\n
where not like using my following as a sounding board<\/p>\n
as much as kind of like feeling<\/p>\n
like they were a community of people that were receiving it<\/p>\n
and making me in turn feel less alone<\/p>\n
in the days I was writing about.<\/p>\n
So I think it’s always nice, you know,<\/p>\n
to see what hits harder, I suppose.<\/p>\n
And there have definitely been instances like in years past<\/p>\n
where that’s influenced the amount of attention I put<\/p>\n
towards a song.<\/p>\n
Because I think I was so impulsive with uploading things.<\/p>\n
Like I would be in the middle of writing a song<\/p>\n
and like have just recorded the first half of a verse<\/p>\n
and still not have gotten to the second yet<\/p>\n
and be like, Post, you know? Wow, yeah.<\/p>\n
I feel less impulsive with the internet today.<\/p>\n
But at the same time, I love that feeling.<\/p>\n
I know, I mean, the bridge from I Told You Things.<\/p>\n
Fans, maybe me, maybe,<\/p>\n
I called it the crashout song of the year.<\/p>\n
Oh, geez. Emotionally devastating.<\/p>\n
Great, yeah.<\/p>\n
Great. Do you agree with that take?<\/p>\n
I love that song. What’s the story?<\/p>\n
Tell me the story. I loved writing that song.<\/p>\n
I love that song now more than ever after touring it<\/p>\n
and kind of getting the catharsis of really,<\/p>\n
it feels so conversational,<\/p>\n
like kind of aggro, which I love.<\/p>\n
I love it too. I think it’s funny<\/p>\n
just in terms of audience influence on something,<\/p>\n
the way that their spirit rewires my memories associated<\/p>\n
with music is pretty great.<\/p>\n
Especially because it’s also like,<\/p>\n
it’s entertaining to see people like headbang<\/p>\n
to a song that I certainly wasn’t headbanging to<\/p>\n
when I was writing it.<\/p>\n
You know what I mean? I was like basically right here<\/p>\n
being like…<\/p>\n
And now they’re like fully…<\/p>\n
So funny. And so I love them for that<\/p>\n
when I think of that song,<\/p>\n
instead of thinking about what I was writing about,<\/p>\n
I think about like specific shows<\/p>\n
where I remember them going particularly hard for it.<\/p>\n
So you’ve seen all the viral TikToks?<\/p>\n
I haven’t.<\/p>\n
I don’t have TikTok or anything.<\/p>\n
Good. I have Instagram<\/p>\n
on my phone sometimes.<\/p>\n
Another reason I’m grateful for shows<\/p>\n
is like that’s what I receive.<\/p>\n
Yeah. Exactly. The internet for me<\/p>\n
makes me feel unwell. Fair enough.<\/p>\n
Very fair. I think you’ve said,<\/p>\n
and I’ve heard other artists say this,<\/p>\n
which is so interesting to me,<\/p>\n
that like the moment that you put something out there<\/p>\n
and certainly once you begin performing it<\/p>\n
like it’s not really about what it was to you anymore.<\/p>\n
It sort of becomes a completely different experience<\/p>\n
of the material, which seems so interesting<\/p>\n
just to kind of see a piece of work<\/p>\n
kind of develop a life of its own like through your fans.<\/p>\n
Yeah, because it just doesn’t belong to you anymore<\/p>\n
once you put it out.<\/p>\n
And it’s inspiring, I think, to be in a room<\/p>\n
with a bunch of people that are like,<\/p>\n
we’re all kind of growing up together.<\/p>\n
It feels like a massive support group or something,<\/p>\n
like where everyone is relating to each other<\/p>\n
on some level, regardless of like,<\/p>\n
the fact that they’re strangers technically.<\/p>\n
It just feels, you know, it’s that kind of like<\/p>\n
catharsis that everyone talks about when it comes to music.<\/p>\n
Everyone feels. And no one’s a stranger<\/p>\n
at your show.<\/p>\n
I don’t know how to tell you, like I’ve gotten to watch it<\/p>\n
and the way that everyone freaks out,<\/p>\n
everyone’s screaming lyrics together,<\/p>\n
everyone always makes friends, let me tell you.<\/p>\n
They’re dancing in circles around each other.<\/p>\n
They’re so sweet.<\/p>\n
It’s so sweet to watch.<\/p>\n
But talking about your shows,<\/p>\n
because I know you’ve said the idea of performing<\/p>\n
has made you nervous before, which I always,<\/p>\n
I couldn’t believe because when you go on stage,<\/p>\n
I do feel you transform<\/p>\n
and you’re so focused in those songs.<\/p>\n
Like you really, I feel like you almost go back to<\/p>\n
when you were writing them,<\/p>\n
like that emotion really flows through you.<\/p>\n
And I was curious if anything’s helped you<\/p>\n
become more confident in performing.<\/p>\n
You’ve done sold out arena tours, you’ve,<\/p>\n
you know, whether opening for people,<\/p>\n
starring in your own tours.<\/p>\n
How have you found that confidence<\/p>\n
and how have you been able to be less nervous?<\/p>\n
Well, I think like before<\/p>\n
I hadn’t ever played a show prior to COVID.<\/p>\n
So after quarantine lifted,<\/p>\n
played my first show was like less than 100 people<\/p>\n
in California and like south of LA.<\/p>\n
And it was the night before I was like up, vomited.<\/p>\n
Like didn’t sleep, I was so anxious.<\/p>\n
And like that was like at a time where anxiety generally<\/p>\n
was just at like just, always at a nine.<\/p>\n
Of course. Awesome, yeah.<\/p>\n
Love that. Always at a nine.<\/p>\n
And so then this was something that always freaked me out.<\/p>\n
Hardcore, the idea of it.<\/p>\n
And anyway, and then the show started<\/p>\n
and I remember in real-time being like, I was so wrong.<\/p>\n
I was so wrong, and I loved being wrong.<\/p>\n
And I felt like that was just a larger lesson,<\/p>\n
you know, how many stories we tell ourselves<\/p>\n
and how lucky it is when those actually<\/p>\n
are not true all the time.<\/p>\n
And I think in terms of, not that I’ve never felt<\/p>\n
like nervous before a show since then,<\/p>\n
but the like core rattling fear never came back<\/p>\n
in that capacity.<\/p>\n
Even when we were playing like the biggest rooms,<\/p>\n
it’s like a different thing, I think,<\/p>\n
to answer your question, the confidence piece<\/p>\n
is really being wrong and being like gifted with this,<\/p>\n
actually like experience that’s based in community,<\/p>\n
not in isolation.<\/p>\n
It’s like the opposite of what I thought it would be.<\/p>\n
And then also the people that I get to tour with<\/p>\n
are like family, you know, and like the most down,<\/p>\n
hysterical, brilliant people I’ve ever met,<\/p>\n
you know, like all of us living on a bus together,<\/p>\n
it’s like hard to not laugh instead of cry<\/p>\n
at anything that’s a little stressful or weird.<\/p>\n
You know, when things go wrong,<\/p>\n
it’s like those are the people I want to be with,<\/p>\n
which is such a gift because shit goes sideways on tour<\/p>\n
like practically on a daily basis, you know?<\/p>\n
So many variables.<\/p>\n
I can’t imagine the logistic nightmare<\/p>\n
that is like being on tour.<\/p>\n
When something goes wrong, it’s kind of the most fun.<\/p>\n
That’s interesting. No, I believe that.<\/p>\n
I mean, when the sound went out, it was crazy.<\/p>\n
In Madrid we were playing this festival<\/p>\n
and the whole stage lost all power.<\/p>\n
Every light, every cape, nothing made any sound<\/p>\n
and we stayed.<\/p>\n
Just had my acoustic guitar and everyone sang together<\/p>\n
and you’re like, Oh, they probably,<\/p>\n
I hope they won’t forget it, I’ll never forget it.<\/p>\n
You know what I mean? I heard the story,<\/p>\n
so no one will ever forget that.<\/p>\n
It’s so special.<\/p>\n
I know you keep it fun on tour.<\/p>\n
You’re talking about all the people who surround you<\/p>\n
and I know you guys played Traders even,<\/p>\n
which I’m in admiration of even setting that up.<\/p>\n
But just to have those fun moments-<\/p>\n
I blew it in the final hour.<\/p>\n
I was so close to winning.<\/p>\n
You were a traitor.<\/p>\n
Yes. Wow.<\/p>\n
And I lost. [laughs]<\/p>\n
And I lost.<\/p>\n
It was devastating.<\/p>\n
It was like people were like going so hard.<\/p>\n
People were swearing on like family members.<\/p>\n
Like it was serious.<\/p>\n
People were, it was heavy.<\/p>\n
I mean, I did sort of wonder with like Audrey now<\/p>\n
on a tour of her own, like are you guys like talking shop?<\/p>\n
Is she seeking advice?<\/p>\n
Have you tried to dispense advice<\/p>\n
that she actually didn’t need?<\/p>\n
Because she’s like,<\/p>\n
I’m good. I couldn’t,<\/p>\n
I saw her show in London a couple weeks ago.<\/p>\n
She doesn’t need advice from me.<\/p>\n
Yeah, she’s good. It’s like electric.<\/p>\n
It’s electric and I think regardless of what it is<\/p>\n
the people you love are doing,<\/p>\n
like when you see them in their power,<\/p>\n
it gives me chills now.<\/p>\n
Like I have known her since we were so little.<\/p>\n
We met when we were 10 and the person she is on stage<\/p>\n
on this tour right now is the person that she was<\/p>\n
when we were 10 years old.<\/p>\n
And so, there’s something just about seeing a room of people<\/p>\n
like go absolutely nuts for it that I’m like, finally.<\/p>\n
It’s like that thing where you’re like,<\/p>\n
oh, I wish everyone grew up with the best friend<\/p>\n
that I had and now people are getting to.<\/p>\n
That’s so cute. Like this just, you know,<\/p>\n
I feel like she’s so brilliant and so kind of accessible<\/p>\n
that people who haven’t lived<\/p>\n
through the shit she’s writing about yet, who are younger,<\/p>\n
are still able to feel like angsty about it.<\/p>\n
And people who have lived it times 10 are like,<\/p>\n

And so this kind of multi-gen, you know, audience<\/p>\n
who are all like losing it over her,<\/p>\n

Well, we made that here in New York at Electric Lady.<\/p>\n
That song was very obviously,<\/p>\n
the first single to me as soon as I wrote it.<\/p>\n
I was a little bit late to the studio,<\/p>\n
which I’m very prompt.<\/p>\n
And I was kind of having an emotionally confused morning.<\/p>\n
There was something, do you know when you sometimes wake up<\/p>\n
and you feel like as if you’re being haunted by a spirit,<\/p>\n
or like a relative who’s no longer,<\/p>\n
like, do you ever feel like the energy<\/p>\n
as if someone’s got their hands on your shoulders?<\/p>\n
When I can’t fall asleep, that’s when I wake up.<\/p>\n
There’s actually a really great psychiatrist<\/p>\n
I’d love to point you to.<\/p>\n
Now I’m like, you are an artist and I love that.<\/p>\n
No, no, do you know what I mean?<\/p>\n
I’m like, do you ever feel like when it’s like,<\/p>\n
it feels like you’re wearing like a little cape<\/p>\n
around your shoulders. Is it a good way<\/p>\n
or a bad way? No, in like, sometimes<\/p>\n
it’s great. This was, and I think any time,<\/p>\n

I do think, this one was just kind of heavy.<\/p>\n
I kind of just felt like weighed down<\/p>\n
when I was walking to the studio and I started tearing up<\/p>\n
and it was kind of at this period<\/p>\n
where I wasn’t crying very much<\/p>\n
and I was like something’s blocking me,<\/p>\n
like what is going on?<\/p>\n
And started feeling teary and got to the studio<\/p>\n
and there was that, the loop that plays at the beginning<\/p>\n
of that song was playing in the room<\/p>\n
and I was anticipating walking into a different thing<\/p>\n
that we were working on the night before,<\/p>\n
I very quickly felt like the sound<\/p>\n
was exactly matched to that hands on shoulders cape feeling.<\/p>\n
Yeah, incredible.<\/p>\n
And so then it just- The spirit joined you.<\/p>\n
Imagine, they’re like, Gracie’s out of her mind now.<\/p>\n
And anyway, so it just really like poured out<\/p>\n
and I love that song.<\/p>\n
Like producing it was the best time.<\/p>\n
Aaron and Bella Blasco, who’s our engineer,<\/p>\n
who’s an absolute genius.<\/p>\n
And then like a week later, Justin Vernon came in.<\/p>\n
His voice is in there in like a beautiful way<\/p>\n
that I felt again, like I feel like he has some ancient<\/p>\n
and futuristic gift that is just beyond.<\/p>\n
It’s both.<\/p>\n
I’m like, where’d you come from?<\/p>\n
And what are you drinking?<\/p>\n
Can I have it?<\/p>\n
So anyway, that song it means a lot to me and I love it.<\/p>\n
And it was a nice place to kind of put all of these,<\/p>\n
not like self-deprecating thoughts,<\/p>\n
but just all of the dark cloud energy into one place<\/p>\n
and then when I was done with it,<\/p>\n
it made me feel like a teenager again<\/p>\n
where I would like write something and then feel healed.<\/p>\n
I mean, what a gift. Lucky day.<\/p>\n
I did sort of wonder if like as time has gone on<\/p>\n
like your songwriting process has changed<\/p>\n
or kind of where you find inspiration<\/p>\n
or how it strikes you even has kind of evolved?<\/p>\n
Or does it feel sort of consistent<\/p>\n
with when you were kind of starting?<\/p>\n
I guess it feels consistent in that I just feel<\/p>\n
like it’s like a snapshot of a,<\/p>\n
like even just a passing feeling.<\/p>\n
Like it always feels reflective of where I’m at.<\/p>\n
And I think when I look back at the music that I’ve written,<\/p>\n
so much of it has been based and feeling<\/p>\n
like in these kind of insecure, you know, anxious places,<\/p>\n
whether within yourself, or in relationship to someone else.<\/p>\n
I will say, like with this album, I think being at a place<\/p>\n
where I feel like I’m able to,<\/p>\n
what’s like a less corny way to say like protect your peace?<\/p>\n
But do you know what I mean?<\/p>\n
I feel like as you just grow up,<\/p>\n
your filter for what feels good or bad,<\/p>\n
or like you or unlike you,<\/p>\n
you accumulate kind of better tools<\/p>\n
to better align with yourself and like,<\/p>\n
yeah, kind of protect yourself, et cetera.<\/p>\n
And so I feel like as I’ve been lucky enough<\/p>\n
to get to a place that I think is more solid<\/p>\n
than my younger years,<\/p>\n
I was worried like what will I write about?<\/p>\n
Totally.<\/p>\n
That like kind of like- No need to worry.<\/p>\n
If that’s gone<\/p>\n
then what do I do? Yeah, no truly<\/p>\n
and I think what I’m learning<\/p>\n
in real-time is it’s like a real privilege<\/p>\n
to feel more settled internally<\/p>\n
because it just means you’re looking outward more<\/p>\n
and kind of able to write about<\/p>\n
a whole host of other things.<\/p>\n
Totally. So, yeah.<\/p>\n
I mean, it’s such a different thing,<\/p>\n
but I feel like I’ve had sort of a similar thing<\/p>\n
where I was like, I so associate writing with anxiety.<\/p>\n
I so associate it with like a deep dread<\/p>\n
and sense of fear that the thing isn’t going to happen.<\/p>\n
But then, like, as time goes on and you become,<\/p>\n
that kind of goes away a little bit<\/p>\n
and you still have your tools<\/p>\n
because obviously you’ve been developing your tools<\/p>\n
the whole time.<\/p>\n
Like, that’s quite a powerful thing to be like,<\/p>\n
Oh, actually, I don’t need the absolute<\/p>\n
like wrenching fear to do this thing.<\/p>\n
Like I’ve been doing this thing all along.<\/p>\n
Right, do you write on a daily basis?<\/p>\n
I end up writing on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
That’s true.<\/p>\n
And you know what? It’s true,<\/p>\n
because I feel like some of the things I do<\/p>\n
I don’t like take seriously, but it is writing.<\/p>\n
Like, it is using the tools.<\/p>\n
It really is,<\/p>\n
and she’s amazing. Yeah, and it’s all additive,<\/p>\n
me, this is therapy, anyway-<\/p>\n
Wait, wait, wait, can I ask one follow-up?<\/p>\n
Please. Okay, when you say<\/p>\n
you’re writing, is it for like personal<\/p>\n
or are you saying for work? It’s for work.<\/p>\n
But I do…<\/p>\n
Well, actually, I’m sort of curious about this for you<\/p>\n
because I, and this is- Flipping it back.<\/p>\n
I know. Look at you.<\/p>\n
Look at that. I talk to myself<\/p>\n
kind of a lot.<\/p>\n
And I find that quite productive actually<\/p>\n
in terms of like helping me to articulate things<\/p>\n
that I am working out,<\/p>\n
and it’s helpful to do out loud for me.<\/p>\n
Are you like this at all?<\/p>\n
Absolutely. Okay, yeah.<\/p>\n
Like, I find it embarrassing,<\/p>\n
but I’m also kind of like, it’s doing something now.<\/p>\n
I think there’s nothing more endearing in the whole world<\/p>\n
than hearing someone talk to themselves.<\/p>\n
And I say that because it’s not writing,<\/p>\n
but it is like working out a thought<\/p>\n
in a way that writing is.<\/p>\n
Yes, 100%. I think it’s also probably, yeah,<\/p>\n
probably just goes hand in hand with your process<\/p>\n
if you find yourself doing it a lot.<\/p>\n
My older brother was like this so much.<\/p>\n
Like, you know, when you see a little kid<\/p>\n
with such an active imagination,<\/p>\n
like when they’re in their own world,<\/p>\n
they’re looking at a tree…<\/p>\n
Do you know what I mean? Where you’re like,<\/p>\n
There’s a world happening? Totally.<\/p>\n
I feel like those people grow up talking<\/p>\n
to themselves. Totally.<\/p>\n
And those are storytellers. Yes, storytelling.<\/p>\n
Linking back to storytelling. And you’re doing accents-<\/p>\n
Oh my God. In the dirt.<\/p>\n
This is so evocative. Do you know what I mean?<\/p>\n
It is. It’s like my favorite thing.<\/p>\n
It’s so cute. And then we grow up<\/p>\n
and society’s like, That’s weird, don’t do that.<\/p>\n
But if you can still access those worlds<\/p>\n
you build for yourself, you do have this safe space.<\/p>\n
That’s a powerful thing. And I don’t, again,<\/p>\n
don’t mean in a crazy way,<\/p>\n
but just to have these little<\/p>\n
places to go- Oh, sure.<\/p>\n
Yes, total. To be creative.<\/p>\n
Okay, I mean, I do want to take a hard pivot<\/p>\n
to your experience of going,<\/p>\n
was this your first time going to the Oscars?<\/p>\n
Yes.<\/p>\n
Oh my God. What was that like?<\/p>\n
It was so emotional anytime, anyone won,<\/p>\n
I mean, it was beautiful<\/p>\n
to see unbelievable artists celebrated.<\/p>\n
I feel any space that does that is one that I like.<\/p>\n
These days, I’m crying so quick as soon as someone<\/p>\n
like mentions their family or, you know what I mean?<\/p>\n

and I think that he strikes the perfect balance<\/p>\n

and she makes me feel very embodied.<\/p>\n

like people that make you feel really integrated,<\/p>\n
that’s what I want to lean into, so.<\/p>\n
I love that. It’ll be an adventure.<\/p>\n

And also just like to tap into a different side<\/p>\n
