Harrison Ford<\/a> may be synonymous with Indiana Jones today, but according to director Steven Spielberg, the role in his film franchise was originally destined for another \u201980s icon: Tom Selleck.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During a recent appearance on the \u201cIMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson\u201d podcast<\/a><\/span>, Spielberg revealed that he and co-creator George Lucas initially selected Selleck to lead 1981\u2019s \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark\u201d before circumstances forced a change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe came in, and he read for the part. He was good,\u201d Spielberg said of Selleck. \u201cHis test was good. I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s where the strings of destiny didn\u2019t cross with Tom,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe wanted Tom. We gave Tom the part, and then he had, which we didn\u2019t realize, an outstanding contract with CBS network to do \u2018Magnum P.I.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Selleck went on to star as the titular private investigator in \u201cMagnum P.I.\u201d throughout the show\u2019s eight-season run from 1980 to 1988. But in his 2024 memoir, \u201cYou Never Know,\u201d the actor opened up about reading for the part of Indiana Jones as he awaited the fate of his pilot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen I walked into the room for the audition, it was just those two guys: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas,\u201d he wrote, per People<\/a>. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel particularly nervous. I was a big \u2018Star Wars\u2019 fan, so I\u2019m certain I brought that up. On my drive home, I thought, \u2018Boy, that was pretty cool, no pressure, and having a face-to-face with two people whose work I love.\u2019 And what a great diversion it was from my preoccupation with the outcome of my pilot.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although Selleck was enthusiastic about the first \u201cIndiana Jones\u201d script, he ultimately had to pass on the opportunity because his crime drama had already been picked up by CBS and was preparing to start shooting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen they heard we wanted Tom, they immediately put \u2018Magnum P.I.\u2019 into production, preempting Tom from being in \u2018Indiana Jones,\u2019\u201d Spielberg explained on the \u201cIMO\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As many know, the role eventually went to Ford after Spielberg, in a twist of fate, saw him in 1980\u2032s \u201cStar Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI pulled George [Lucas] aside, and I said, \u2018George, what about that guy who plays Han Solo to play Indiana Jones?\u2019\u201d the filmmaker recalled on the podcast. \u201cAnd George looked at me funny and said, \u2018Well, but he\u2019s Han Solo.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Spielberg continued: \u201d\u2018Yeah,\u2019 I said, \u2018I know, but, you know, John Wayne might have been in the same Western forever, but he played different characters.\u2019 I said, \u2019You know, he could do more than one role. And George said, \u2018OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Had Selleck been cast as Indiana Jones, though, Spielberg joked that the actor\u2019s signature mustache likely wouldn\u2019t have made the cut for his franchise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMaybe if the films were as successful,\u201d the director teased, \u201che could have demanded the mustache.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
