Tammi Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong>\u00a0is celebrating 27 years with husband Erik Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong>\u00a0while he remains behind bars.<\/p>\n

\u201cHappy 27th Anniversary to my favorite person! \u2764\ufe0f 27 years later, you still make me laugh and make life more fun every day,\u201d Tammi wrote via X<\/a> on Friday, June 12. \u201cHere\u2019s to exciting times ahead\u2014because the best is yet to come! \ud83e\udd42\u2728.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erik, 55, is in jail alongside brother Lyle Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong>\u00a0for the murder of their parents, Jos\u00e9<\/strong> and Kitty Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong>. Jos\u00e9 and Kitty were found dead in 1989. The following year, Erik and Lyle, now 58, were arrested on two counts of first-degree murder.<\/p>\n

After two trials, Erik and Lyle were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, the brothers have maintained that their mother and father were physically, emotionally and sexually abusive and they acted in self-defense.<\/p>\n

While behind bars, Erik connected with Tammi<\/a> via letters. They met in-person for the first time in 1997 and wed two years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did get very close through letters and then you know the relationship moved forward when I did meet him,\u201d Tammi said in a 2005 interview with MSNBC. \u201cBut it was the correspondence that he became a really good friend of mine and understood what I was going through and I understood what he was going through.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2024, Erik and Lyle\u2019s case got public attention after their story was depicted in Ryan Murphy<\/strong>\u2019s Monsters<\/em> series. Nicholas Alexander Chavez<\/strong> played Lyle, while Erik was portrayed by Cooper Koch<\/strong>. The Netflix show, which earned critical acclaim, chronicled Lyle and Erik\u2019s lives before, during and after the murders of their parents.<\/p>\n

While the show aired, Erik and Lyle received support from viewers \u2014 including Kim Kardashian<\/strong>. The reality star, who is an advocate for prison reform, visited the pair in prison and published a personal essay for NBC News supporting their release.<\/p>\n
