Over the years, I\u2019ve developed a level of attachment to Olivia Rodrigo<\/a>\u2019s first two albums\u20142021\u2019s Sour<\/em><\/a> and 2023\u2019s Guts<\/em><\/a>\u2014that feels a little dissonant, given that I am almost 33 years of age and Rodrigo\u2019s debut came out when she was quite literally 18. Maybe it\u2019s a classic case of arrested development, but nothing has ever felt more healing than screaming along to \u201cGood 4 U\u201d as I drove around Austin after a breakup five years ago, and if I\u2019m being honest, I still play \u201cBad Idea Right?\u201d pretty much every time I send a text that I probably shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

So how does Rodrigo\u2019s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love<\/em>, stand up to its predecessors? Below, quite literally every thought I had during my inaugural listen.<\/p>\n

  1. Oh, the tiny, Gen Z-pink font opening the video for \u201cDrop Dead\u201d<\/a>!<\/li>\n
  2. Or is Rodrigo actually some younger-than-Gen-Z micro-generation I\u2019m too old and chopped to even have heard of?<\/li>\n
  3. Where in America do bars close at 11 p.m.?<\/li>\n
  4. College towns, I guess.<\/li>\n
  5. I love Rodrigo\u2019s synth-pop era.<\/li>\n
  6. Not to mention her triumphant revival of the babydoll dress<\/a>, about which I will hear no evil.<\/li>\n
  7. If more pop stars referenced Hole<\/em>-era Courtney Love<\/a>, I genuinely believe this world would be a better place.<\/li>\n
  8. A Pisces and a Gemini\u2026IDK about that one, diva.<\/li>\n
  9. Then again, I am a Cancer who dated a Virgo<\/a> for almost four years, so what do I know?<\/li>\n
  10. Emerging from a basement apartment in a hoodie with the hood up\u2026that\u2019s so New York.<\/li>\n
  11. I love when Rodrigo gets sad about how cool other women are, because there\u2019s no trace of pick-me-ism in her complaints\u2026they\u2019re just relatable.<\/li>\n

  13. Balletcore<\/a> plus pajamas is very Lily-Rose Depp and 070 Shake<\/a> to me.<\/li>\n

  18. I simply cannot wait to blast this one in my car at a neighbor-angering volume as I pull out of my garage.<\/li>\n
  19. \u201cI\u2019m a zombie in my body\u201d\u2026well, exactly!<\/li>\n
  20. Letting-fruit-go-moldy-in-your-fridge-due-to-depression representation in these lyrics.<\/li>\n
  21. For that matter, I need to hurry up and finish this story so I can go puree and freeze the pound of strawberries in my fridge before they officially turn on me.<\/li>\n
  22. Loving the opening riff of \u201cU+Me=<\/a><\/li>\n
  23. Also, glad to know the <\/li>\n
  24. Rodrigo is so right about Cadbury being the most romantic candy.<\/li>\n
  25. Hear me out: American candy is too sugary, Swiss chocolate is too fancy\u2026British treats are where it\u2019s at.<\/li>\n
  26. This song is sort of giving P.S. Eliot<\/a> in a way I adore.<\/li>\n
  27. Am I deeply washed for hoping that \u201cMy Way\u201d<\/a> would be a cover of the Frank Sinatra song?<\/li>\n
  28. We need to simply say \u201cYou\u2019re being fucking weird\u201d to our opps more often, even if it\u2019s in the middle of a pop song.<\/li>\n

  30. \u201cThe Cure\u201d<\/a> shares musical DNA with \u201cPretty Girls\u201d\u201d by Rene\u00e9 Rapp<\/a>, albeit with less lesbian subtext.<\/li>\n

  38. Are there siren sounds in it I\u2019m not hearing?<\/li>\n
  39. All right, \u201cLess\u201d<\/a> is too<\/em> low-energy.<\/li>\n
  40. Ooh, \u201cExpectations\u201d<\/a> won me back.<\/li>\n
  41. So \u201980s-movie-soundtrack!<\/li>\n
  42. \u201cI won\u2019t settle for a guy with a fake job\u201d\u2026from your lips to God\u2019s ears, Liv.<\/li>\n
  43. I was literally about to write \u201cThis song is clearly written by a woman who\u2019s been dating men in LA,\u201d and then Rodrigo sang: \u201cDon\u2019t think my future husband\u2019s at this bar in Silver Lake.\u201d<\/li>\n

  45. Okay, this high-dating-expectations anthem officially rocks.<\/li>\n
  46. \u201cCigarette Smoke\u201d<\/a> is just okay to me.<\/li>\n
  47. Overall, I\u2019d have to say my top plays on You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love<\/em> are \u201cExpectations\u201d and \u201cMaggots for Brains.\u201d<\/li>\n
  48. Not quite a total slay of a third album, but\u2026I love it anyway!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n
