The Little Couple <\/i>alum Jen Arnold <\/b><\/a>is weighing in after influencer Jesse Ridgway<\/b>\u2019s wife, Ashley Ridgway<\/b>, terminated her pregnancy<\/a> after a Down syndrome diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrenatal consultation has become one of the most important spaces in modern perinatal medicine,\u201d Arnold, 52, wrote via Instagram<\/span><\/a> on Friday, June 12. \u201cThe goal of prenatal consultation is not to steer families toward a decision, but to help them make one with clarity and support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnold works as a neonatologist, where she often does prenatal consults to tell parents about unexpected pregnancy complications.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our ability to diagnose fetal conditions expands \u2014 and as fetal interventions and prenatal therapies continue to evolve \u2014 families need more than information alone,\u201d she explained. \u201cThey need careful, compassionate, non-directive guidance that helps them understand prognosis, uncertainty and options in a patient and family centered way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnold continued, \u201cAs a neonatologist, and as someone with a disability, I believe those conversations must also include the dignity and lived experience of disabled people. Better prenatal medicine should mean better support and better counseling \u2014 not more fear, and not language that implies some lives are less worth living. As fetal medicine advances, our ethical responsibility to communicate with balance and humility grows too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesse, 33, announced earlier this month that his wife, 31, recently got an abortion<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21,\u201d he wrote in a social media statement, noting the fetus was diagnosed with Down syndrome. \u201cThe choice was not made lightly. \u2026 I know some of you may be very disappointed to hear this news. We are devastated. This has been extremely traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesse added at the time, \u201cWe made a difficult decision that we believe in the long-run will be beneficial for our family. Thankfully, we had a choice. It will take a little time to move on, but we are excited to try again in the future and hopefully have a better outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
