Harry Styles<\/a> paid tribute to the late David Hockney and reflected on his time in One Direction<\/a> last night (June 12), as he kicked off his record-breaking residency at Wembley Stadium.<\/p>\n Hockney \u2013 whose painting of Styles was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery<\/a>\u00a0in 2023 \u2013 died on June 11, aged 88, and the musician honoured him during his set by sharing a quote from the painter on the big screens.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing,\u201d the quote read. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.\u201d<\/p>\n Styles\u2019 gig last night marked the first of 12 gigs at Wembley<\/a>, which will see the star break the record for the most shows at the venue in a single tour. Coldplay<\/a> previously held the record, delivering 10 gigs at the stadium last year as part of their Music Of The Spheres tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n The London residency follows the Together, Together tour beginning in Amsterdam in May<\/a>, and will be followed by stops in S\u00e3o Paulo, Mexico City, New York, Melbourne and Sydney. He will be supported by a different artist in each city, joined by Shania Twain<\/a> in London, who delivered a set of hits and new tracks from her upcoming album, \u2018Little Miss Twain\u2019.<\/p>\n As the sounds of Simon And Garfunkel<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Bridge Over Troubled Water\u2019 played over the stadium PA, Styles made his way to the stage, kicking off his set with \u2018Are You Listening Yet?\u2019, from his latest album, \u2018Kiss All The Time. Disco Occasionally\u2019<\/a>. Between renditions of \u2018Golden\u2019 and \u2018Adore You\u2019, he addressed the crowd for the first time, saying: \u201cOur job tonight is to entertain you. Your job is to have as much fun as you possibly can.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you want to sing, if you want to dance, please feel free. Please feel free to be whoever it is you\u2019ve always wanted to be tonight. We\u2019ve got each other\u2019s backs.\u201d<\/p>\n Throughout the night, Styles subtly reworked some of the songs on the setlist. He dedicated \u2018Taste Back\u2019 \u201cto all the ravers in the house\u201d, as a snippet of Underworld<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Born Slippy\u2019 was interpolated into the song, while a brief burst of Talking Heads<\/a>\u2019 \u2018This Must Be The Place\u2019 was introduced to \u2018Treat People With Kindness\u2019. During \u2018Dance No More\u2019, the pop star\u2019s band played part of the groove from Happy Mondays<\/a>\u2019 \u2018Step On\u2019, while Styles sang a snatch of Gorillaz<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Clint Eastwood\u2019.<\/p>\n There were also nods to Styles\u2019 days in One Direction early in the set. As the musician left the stage after \u2018Fine Line\u2019, the string section on stage played a medley featuring clips of the group\u2019s hits \u2018Night Changes\u2019 and \u2018History\u2019, plus Styles\u2019 own track \u2018Falling\u2019. After \u2018Keep Driving\u2019, he took the time to reflect on Wembley\u2019s connections to his and the boyband\u2019s journeys.<\/p>\n \u201cJust outside of this building, just next door, is Wembley Arena, and 16 years ago, my sister brought me to London for the very first time for my X Factor<\/em> audition,\u201d he said. \u201cSo driving here today, and any time I come through Wembley, means so much to me, \u2018cause right in that building next door, I was put into a band. We were called One Direction.<\/p>\n \u201cDriving here today, I drove the same way I used to come when I went to that building and she brought me here. My sister is here tonight \u2013 I want to say thank you to Gemma. We went to the Natural History Museum, we went to Big Ben, we saw everything! So it means a lot for me to be in here tonight. Thank you, thank you, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n The Together, Together setlist features a different surprise song each night at the start of the encore. Last night, Styles treated the Wembley audience to \u2018Little Freak\u2019, taken from \u2018Harry\u2019s House\u2019<\/a>, for the first time since 2023. After the song, he spoke to the audience for the final time, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve been listening to me for a week, or a month, or a year, or five years, or 10 years, or 16 years, or whatever it is, but you have changed my life over and over again.
