Certain albums just encapsulate the ’90s to a tee. When you think of that decade in music, specific records spring to mind. You know the ones. And on this day, 31 years ago, one rock album burst onto the scene, paving the way for women in music for decades to come.<\/p>\n
That’s right; it’s Alanis Morissette<\/strong>‘s seminal Jagged Little Pill. I’d argue it’s her magnum opus. Released on June 13, 1995, the alt-rock record was Morissette’s third studio effort and the first to get a global release. It’s also a significant musical pivot from her first two albums, which were more dance-pop. Jagged Little Pill became her defining sound. She wrote every track on the album, too, and composed the music with producer Glen Ballard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The iconic “You Oughta Know” was the first single released in promotion of the album. Rumors swirled about the subject of the scathing anthem. While Dave Coulier<\/strong>, who dated Morissette in the early ’90s<\/a>, was at the center of public speculation, in the 2021 documentary<\/a>Jagged, she denied that it was about him<\/a>. The other singles from Jagged Little Pill are “You Learn,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “Ironic,” “Head over Feet,” and “All I Really Want”\u2014all incredible tracks in their own right.<\/p>\n Jagged Little Pill was a massive commercial success. It skyrocketed to the top spot of the US Billboard 200 on Oct. 7, 1995<\/a>, where it reigned for 12 weeks. Morissette became the first Canadian woman to accomplish this. The album also peaked at No. 1 on 13 other weekly global charts, and it went 17x Platinum in the US, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.<\/p>\n The post-grunge record is included on numerous best-of lists and rankings, including Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.<\/a>” The magazine ranked it at No. 69 in the 2020 edition of its famed list. Apple Music ranked Jagged Little Pill at No. 31 on its “100 Best Albums<\/a>” list.
