{"id":2458221,"date":"2026-06-13T22:03:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T22:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2458221"},"modified":"2026-06-13T22:03:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T22:03:15","slug":"we-eat-and-drink-risk-higher-costs-bring-curtain-down-on-more-uk-music-festivals-music-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/we-eat-and-drink-risk-higher-costs-bring-curtain-down-on-more-uk-music-festivals-music-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We eat and drink risk\u2019: higher costs bring curtain down on more UK music festivals | Music industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hosting Scotland\u2019s first Womad festival seemed like an easy sell for Glasgow, the country\u2019s gig capital and self-proclaimed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlife.org.uk\/news\/glasgow-to-host-scotlands-first-ever-womad-festival-in-2026\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cdynamic global hub for music lovers\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, last week the internationally renowned event celebrating performance from around the world, successfully staged in 30 countries since being co-founded by former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel in 1982, was cancelled due to low ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is the 20th casualty so far this year as small and independent festival operators enter another tough summer facing myriad challenges, from belt-tightening consumers becoming more picky about how they spend their cash, to soaring energy and labour costs, and competition from deep-pocketed industry heavyweights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIndependent festival organisers basically eat and drink risk,\u201d says Jon Collins, the chief executive of Live, the body that represents the UK\u2019s live music industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cA year ahead they have to commit to a huge amount of cost to get it all booked in, and then have to believe they will sell enough tickets to deliver it, and hopefully make a small profit at the end of it. It is hard, there are far easier ways to make money, but they love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The longstanding Secret Garden Party, which featured acts from Ed Sheeran to Clean Bandit and attracted Prince Harry as a partygoer in 2014, shut down at the end of its 2024 edition with a symbolic burning of the main stage as its founder said it is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/article\/2024\/aug\/25\/smaller-uk-music-festivals-struggle-to-be-heard-in-crowded-market\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cno longer sustainable for independents to run festivals\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This year, the dream of the team at Chai Wallahs, the touring festival live venue collective, to hold their own event on the same site in Cambridgeshire this year also ended in ashes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"1badca89-4d2e-4aa2-a895-f6d7abd4b20c\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">This year\u2019s edition of the Womad festival at Charlton Park, Wiltshire, will go ahead \u2013 but a Glasgow event has been cancelled.<\/span> Photograph: C Brandon\/Redferns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">By April, they had smashed their crowdfunding target, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/accessaa.co.uk\/where-it-all-began-raises-180000-through-fundraiser\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">raising \u00a3180,000<\/a> to launch the not-for-profit new grassroots festival, Where It All Began, with the aim of pushing back against the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/accessaa.co.uk\/a-new-beginning-for-independents\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cgrind of corporatisation\u201d<\/a> in the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But by the end of that month two of its members <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DXrwzPokqcc\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">had turned to Instagram<\/a> to explain why it would have to be postponed until next year. Problems included poor ticket sales, which they said was \u201cfelt across the entire sector\u201d, and a 10% to 15% increase in infrastructure and transport costs since the start of the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHad we pushed forward we faced a potential loss of \u00a360,000 to \u00a380,000,\u201d the pair said. \u201cWhere It All Began would have died before it started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Days earlier, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/culture\/2015\/05\/duke-of-grafton-red-rooster-festival?srsltid=AfmBOoqRLnctP49nqg_81BPcNKxayk0cGjcidKYwlYORxEhv2z_tZ_bg\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cRock\u2019n\u2019Roll Duke\u201d<\/a>, Henry Fitzroy, had shut down his Nashville-inspired Red Rooster festival, scheduled to take place at the end of May, which he had held at the family\u2019s sprawling Suffolk estate for more than a decade. The event went into liquidation, citing higher costs and reduced ticket sales, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redrooster.org.uk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">with no prospect of refunds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Yet, despite the rising festival casualty count, on the metric of closures this year is the best, or rather least-worst, since before the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There were 43 cancellations or postponements last year; in 2024 that number was 78, and in 2023 the figure was 36, according to the Association of Independent <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/festivals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Festivals<\/a> (AIF).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"c1caad97-916e-42c7-83ab-364163aa37ef\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Valerie June had been due to play the now-cancelled Red Rooster festival.<\/span> Photograph: Charles Sykes\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 250 festivals have shut since before the pandemic, with annual numbers that are going ahead now hovering at about 600.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis year is the lowest number since I have been in post, and some haven\u2019t gone for good, they are just taking a fallow year,\u201d says the AIF chief executive, John Rostron. \u201cThere is always going to be some that fall because they haven\u2019t got it right, or there just isn\u2019t demand for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOne thing that is true is that margins have become incredibly tight due to rising costs. Festivals used to have the capacity to ride the cost bumps between committing 11 months out and what happens up until the day of the festival, but now they can\u2019t ride them like they used to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cLook at fees for artists, as one example: they have gone up 60% to 70% over the last five or six years, particularly for top-tier talent. That might not be a problem for the big corporate players, but it is for the independents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There is also the ongoing debate about the impact of the giant corporations such as US giants AEG and Live Nation, which also owns Ticketmaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wireless festival, which is owned by Live Nation, hit the headlines after organisers were <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2026\/apr\/07\/home-office-bans-kanye-west-from-entering-uk-wireless-festival\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">forced to cancel after a backlash over the choice of Ye<\/a>, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, named as headline act for the three-day festival in London in July. The company\u2019s business activities in the UK were put in the spotlight last year when the competition watchdog launched an investigation into the way <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jul\/02\/uk-watchdog-threatens-ticketmaster-with-legal-action-over-way-oasis-reunion-tickets-were-sold\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">tickets to Oasis\u2019s reunion tour were priced via Ticketmaster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"2557a048-d6ea-4d83-b07a-fd4cc012a0f1\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Alanis Morissette will perform at a new Live Nation event, State Fayre, at Hylands Park in Essex.<\/span> Photograph: Rob Ball\/WireImage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last month, the business and trade select committee of MPs <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/365\/business-and-trade-committee\/news\/213684\/committee-alarmed-by-climate-of-fear-around-dominant-firms-in-uk-music-industry\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">published a report<\/a> calling for the competition watchdog, the CMA, to investigate Live Nation\u2019s dominance and impact on the live music sector, while also suggesting that there seemed to be a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/365\/business-and-trade-committee\/news\/213684\/committee-alarmed-by-climate-of-fear-around-dominant-firms-in-uk-music-industry\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cclimate of fear\u201d<\/a> among witnesses who gave evidence for its investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Live Nation spokesperson said: \u201cThe pressures facing festivals are being felt across the sector, with costs rising significantly for events of all sizes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe UK festival sector remains diverse and highly competitive, with major operators, regional promoters, specialist festival companies and hundreds of independent events all playing an important role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The AIF\u2019s Rostron is cautiously optimistic. \u201cWe are halfway out of the worst of it,\u201d he says. \u201cBut without other interventions there is a dark cloud hovering. Now the industry is pruning down and the ones who have survived are leaner, tougher, they know what they are doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe independent festivals that have survived have a stronger focus on communities, not massive stages and headliners. We focus on digging in locally. We have had to raise ticket prices 10%.
