There are locales big and small for concerts and general entertainment in the Wilmington area these days.<\/p>\n\n

Some of those date back to at least the 1980s, at least according to a listing of weekend events in the Wilmington Morning Star on June 14, 1985. These spots included restaurants, nightclubs and dance halls.<\/p>\n

One of those still around today is the Palm Room in Wrightsville Beach, which had DJs such as The Fat Man playing beach and top 40 hits.<\/p>\n

Paddy’s Hollow at The Cotton Exchange featured musician Neil Morris. Wilmington Sportsmen’s Club<\/a> a private club on Castle Street, played disco music.<\/p>\n\n

Other places listed now have new names, such as Roy’s in the Riverboat Landing on 2 Market St. in downtown Wilmington (now Floriana Wilmington) and The Terrace Inn on 7 Wayne Drive (now Indochine).<\/p>\n

Then there are the places that garnered a big following but did not last. Perhaps the most celebrated of the bunch is The Mad Monk<\/a>, which for a small venue brought in big acts among regional and local acts in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

On this particular weekend, Greensboro group Brice Street Band was set to play rock ‘n’ roll at the original Monk location at 5430 Market St.<\/p>\n

There were also country spots such as Country Music USA on Oleander Drive (near present Casey’s Buffet) and Nashville East Restaurant and Show Lounge on Castle Hayne Road.<\/p>\n\n
