Technology and Columbus&#8217; growth brought it much closer to home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/media-video><\/div>\n<p><story-highlights class=\"spacer-small column ten-column no-gutter\" util-module-path=\"elements\/story\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>June 14 \u2013 or 6\/14 \u2013 has become an unofficial holiday to celebrate Columbus and everything within the 614 area code.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ve made a name for ourselves by being kind of like everyone else, but we do have our quirks.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re not that quirky, really.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/story-highlights><partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Columbus was founded not by explorers or adventurers, but by people looking for a place to put Ohio&#8217;s capital and thinking, &#8220;Over there looks nice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>We were once a test market \u2013 you&#8217;re welcome, world, for the McRib \u2013 because our tastes were so legendarily middle-of-the-road. We were once a swing county in a swing state because so were our politics.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the charm of our longest-serving mayor was that he kept imploring all of us in Columbus to set aside our longstanding cow-town self-image and act like the big city we had become.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/2007\/12\/31\/coleman-wants-your-ideas\/23529937007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/2007\/12\/31\/coleman-wants-your-ideas\/23529937007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It&#8217;s time Columbus had some swagger<\/a>,&#8221; then-Mayor Michael B. Coleman declared in 2007 after he was elected to the third of four terms. &#8220;This is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2012\/01\/08\/coleman-keys-on-youths-housing\/23464869007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2012\/01\/08\/coleman-keys-on-youths-housing\/23464869007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the year of swagger!<\/a>&#8221; he exclaimed five years later.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Are we swaggering yet?<\/p>\n<p>Ehhh. We wear T-shirts that proclaim, &#8220;Columbus &#8216;Til I Die,&#8221; which is funny because that&#8217;s such an un-Columbus-like sentiment. Large numbers of us work for an insurance company and state bureaucracy. We&#8217;re not prone to such outbursts of emotion.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s probably only fitting that 614 Day, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/events\/2026\/06\/10\/614-day-parties-events-columbus-across-central-ohio\/90420016007\/\">the day we celebrate all things Columbus<\/a>, falls on one of the middle days of one of the middle months of the year.<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Even our quirks are kind of mild as quirks go. But what the heck, let&#8217;s celebrate ourselves, within reason of course. We can save the swagger for later.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"84371198007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Columbus is a big city! Honest!<\/h2>\n<p>As Columbus residents, it is incumbent upon us all to memorize this number: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/columbuscityohio\/PST045225#PST045225\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/columbuscityohio\/PST045225#PST045225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">938,396. That&#8217;s our latest population estimate<\/a>, as of July 1, 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/><partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>People who don&#8217;t live here are dumbfounded to learn that Columbus is as big a city as it is, and we are dumbfounded by their dumbfoundedness. Hence, anytime we go outside of our city, even if it&#8217;s just up to Cleveland or down to Cincinnati, we will feel it necessary to tell people the population of Columbus and its national ranking among population centers.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s currently No. 15, by the way, right after Charlotte, North Carolina, and ahead of Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Columbus surpassed Cleveland in 1982 to become the biggest city in Ohio, even though as late as 2000, the American Heritage Dictionary still sent that distinction northward. Truth be told, the pizza <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/03\/30\/columbus-style-pizza-new-york-post-article-praise\/89385855007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/03\/30\/columbus-style-pizza-new-york-post-article-praise\/89385855007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we so proudly hail as &#8220;Columbus style&#8221;<\/a> is called &#8220;St. Louis style&#8221; in St. Louis and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/06\/10\/giordanos-deep-dish-chicago-pizza-closes-columbus-restaurant-location\/90488520007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/06\/10\/giordanos-deep-dish-chicago-pizza-closes-columbus-restaurant-location\/90488520007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Chicago tavern-style&#8221; in Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>(Columbus is bigger than St. Louis, too, by the way.)<\/p>\n<p>But our legendarily middle-of-the-menu tastebuds have elevated a few dishes and the places that serve them.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Asked for in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/04\/16\/iconic-american-brands-wendys-fast-food-hamburgers\/89433421007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2026\/04\/16\/iconic-american-brands-wendys-fast-food-hamburgers\/89433421007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an April profile of The Wendy&#8217;s Co.<\/a> whether the Frosty was a shake or ice cream, the company&#8217;s chief corporate affairs and sustainability officer, Liliana Esposito, told The Dispatch emphatically that it&#8217;s neither.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a Frosty,&#8221; she said. The Frosty and just about everything else on Wendy&#8217;s menu, pre-Spicy Asiago Ranch Club Chicken Sandwich, was the creation of Dave Thomas, who started the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/07\/wendys-flagship-closed-in-2007-as-chain-grew-far-beyond-its-columbus-roots\/89894387007\/\">chain a couple blocks east of Broad and High in downtown Columbus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Johnny Marzetti, the church-potluck and school-cafeteria staple? <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.columbusmonthly.com\/story\/lifestyle\/2018\/01\/30\/the-disappearance-johnny-marzetti\/15375172007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.columbusmonthly.com\/story\/lifestyle\/2018\/01\/30\/the-disappearance-johnny-marzetti\/15375172007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">That&#8217;s us, too (or maybe not)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And buckeyes, both the OG confection and all of its chocolate-and-peanut-butter spinoffs, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/lifestyle\/food\/2023\/12\/14\/buckeyes-how-peanut-butter-and-chocolate-buckeye-candy-became-ohio-iconic-treat\/71880564007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/lifestyle\/food\/2023\/12\/14\/buckeyes-how-peanut-butter-and-chocolate-buckeye-candy-became-ohio-iconic-treat\/71880564007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">couldn&#8217;t be from anywhere else<\/a> but Columbus.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"84457787007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">And the Fourth of July?<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s like clockwork \u2013 if your clock was totally wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the world celebrates certain holidays on certain days each year. Columbus, for various reasons, has no use for such conventions as calendars and traditions that go back centuries and millennia.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the birth of our nation on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/usa250\/\">July 4, 1776<\/a>, our local <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/events\/2026\/06\/08\/fourth-of-july-events-in-central-ohio-for-america-250\/90374947007\/\">Red, White &amp; BOOM! party will take place July 3<\/a>. Don&#8217;t assume it&#8217;s just a calendar quirk when the Fourth falls on a Sunday or a weekday or whatever day someone might want to avoid. The next three years&#8217; BOOMs will be July 2, 2027; July 3, 2028; and July 3, 2029.<\/p>\n<p>As longtime Dispatch <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/lifestyle\/2009\/05\/24\/explaining-our-town-requires-some\/23386610007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/lifestyle\/2009\/05\/24\/explaining-our-town-requires-some\/23386610007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">columnist Joe Blundo once wrote<\/a>: &#8220;It&#8217;s complicated.&#8221; Organizers boast that they put on the Midwest&#8217;s biggest fireworks show, but, apparently, they don&#8217;t want to disrupt all the other displays that aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Halloween is similarly yanked from its usual Oct. 31 box on the calendar. All but two central Ohio communities declared Oct. 30, 2025, the day of trick or treating within their borders.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>It has been that way for years. Our digital editor, Eleanor Kennedy, explained last fall that Columbus used to host a raucous Halloween street party on Oct. 31 every year, so <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/20\/halloween-in-columbus-central-ohio-trick-or-treat-times-explained\/86749887007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/20\/halloween-in-columbus-central-ohio-trick-or-treat-times-explained\/86749887007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trick or treating was scheduled a day earlier<\/a>. And there&#8217;s still one Jim Tressel-style vest for the coach who left OSU in 2011 and now serves as Ohio&#8217;s lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n<p>You know someone in this town has them all.<\/p>\n<p>At Columbus&#8217; Fourth of July fireworks show \u2013 which, as you already know, is the third of July here \u2013 you&#8217;ll see at least as many people wearing scarlet and gray as you see donning red, white and blue.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Did you know we could all be wearing orange and black? According to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/library.osu.edu\/archives\/faq\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.osu.edu\/archives\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keepers of the OSU archives<\/a> within the university&#8217;s libraries, those were the original colors of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.
