Senior members of the Royal Family were unable to attend the
\nfuneral of Lady Pamela Hicks after the service coincided with
\nTrooping the Colour, the King\u2019s official birthday celebrations in
\nLondon.<\/p>\n
Lady Pamela, one of the last surviving links to the reign of
\nQueen Elizabeth II and a close friend of both the late Queen and
\nPrince Philip, was laid to rest on Saturday at St Bartholomew\u2019s
\nChurch in the Oxfordshire village of Brightwell Baldwin.<\/p>\n
The service took place just over a week after her death at the
\nage of 97.<\/p>\n
King Charles and Queen Camilla did not attend the funeral as
\nthey were carrying out official duties at Trooping the Colour in
\ncentral London, where thousands gathered to watch the annual
\nmilitary spectacle marking the monarch\u2019s official birthday.<\/p>\n
The Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children were
\nalso taking part in the national celebrations, meaning the most
\nsenior working royals were absent from the Oxfordshire service.<\/p>\n
Despite their absence, members of the wider Royal Family and
\naristocratic circles gathered to pay their respects to a woman who
\nspent decades at the heart of royal life.<\/p>\n
Among those attending were Lady Helen Taylor, daughter of the
\nDuke of Kent, and Penelope Knatchbull, Countess Mountbatten of
\nBurma. Maddison Brudenell, a cousin of the Prince of Wales, was
\nalso among the mourners.<\/p>\n
Lady Pamela\u2019s daughter, India Hicks, and other family members
\nwere present as mourners gathered outside the historic parish
\nchurch before following the coffin into the service.<\/p>\n
The funeral was held according to Lady Pamela\u2019s wishes, with
\nhymns and prayers but no formal sermon or eulogy.<\/p>\n
Born Pamela Mountbatten, she was a first cousin of Prince Philip
\nand a great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She served as a
\nbridesmaid at the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant
\nPhilip Mountbatten in 1947, a role that placed her at the centre of
\none of the most significant royal events of the 20th century.<\/p>\n
She later became a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II and
\naccompanied the then Princess Elizabeth on her tour of Kenya in
\n1952. It was during that trip that news arrived of the death of
\nKing George VI, meaning Lady Pamela was present at the moment
\nElizabeth unexpectedly became Queen.<\/p>\n
Following her death on June 5, King Charles paid a personal
\ntribute, saying he was \u201cgreatly saddened\u201d by the loss.<\/p>\n
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, the King said his
\nsorrow was tempered by \u201cthe fondest memories and deepest gratitude
\nfor her long life and loyal service to Queen Elizabeth\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added that her \u201cwarmth, wit and perspicacity always made such
\nan impression\u201d and said she would be \u201cso dearly missed by all those
\nwho knew and loved her\u201d.<\/p>\n
Lady Pamela spent much of her later life at The Grove in
\nBrightwell Baldwin with her husband, the renowned interior designer
\nDavid Hicks, who died in 1998.<\/p>\n
She is survived by her children, Edwina, Ashley and India, as
\nwell as several grandchildren.<\/p>\n
