The Order of the Garter is considered the oldest and most senior
\nOrder of Chivalry in Britain. Created over 700 years ago by King
\nEdward III, the Order was inspired by King Arthur and the Knights
\nof the Round Table. Now, seven centuries on, King Charles will lead
\nthe Order out for the annual ceremony that brings together all its
\nmembers. And as he does so, he\u2019ll wear a dramatic mantle, or cloak,
\nsteeped in history.<\/p>\n
Garter Day is one of the most colourful days of the royal
\ncalendar, thanks to the regalia the Knights of the Garter wear.
\nDonning plumed hats, regalia and deep blue velvet mantles, the
\nknights process through the grounds at Windsor Castle to Saint
\nGeorge\u2019s Chapel, the Order\u2019s spiritual home.<\/p>\n
The deep blue mantles, or robes, are the basis for the Order\u2019s
\noutfit. Though the colour of the robe has changed through the
\ncenturies, it has always been a fixture of the regalia. Today, the
\nfloor-length mantle is a deep blue velvet and made by robemaking
\ncompany, Ede & Ravenscroft.<\/p>\n
Ede & Ravenscroft has been making mantles for the Order of the
\nGarter and the Royal Family since the 17th century.<\/p>\n
The mantle is lined with white taffeta and secured with blue and
\ngold cords. Sewn on the left shoulder is the shield of Saint
\nGeorge\u2019s Cross encircled with by the garter. All the knights and
\nladies of the Order will wear it. Prince William will be at the
\nfront of the Garter ceremony parade, wearing the mantle.<\/p>\n
On top of the mantle, a gold collar is worn. Secured with white
\nribbons on the shoulders, the collar is made of gold heraldic knots
\nand medallions that are roses surrounded by the garter. The Great
\nGeorge pendant is attached to the collar and depicts Saint George
\nslaying a dragon.<\/p>\n
The mantle is a familiar sight at this ceremony and it got an
\neven bigger spotlight just three years ago when it was worn by
\nseveral members of the Royal Family at the Coronation. Among them
\nwere the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of
\nGloucester and the Duke of Kent.<\/p>\n
Today the 24 Knights of the Garter are men and women chosen for
\ntheir contributions to society. The Sovereign personally chooses
\nthe members of the Order.<\/p>\n
The patron saint of the Order is Saint George and its motto is
\nonce again steeped in history. It reads \u2018Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense\u2019
\nand it means \u2018Shame Be to He Who Thinks Evil of It\u2019. Legend says
\nthat it was inspired by an event at a dance where Edward III,
\nfounder of the Order, stopped to pick up the garter of a lady who
\nhad been dancing nearby. As courtiers began to whisper, he told
\nthem \u2018Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense\u2019. The words still echo through
\nhistory today.<\/p>\n
