The Most Noble Order of the Garter is considered to be one of
\nthe most prestigious chivalric orders in the world and King Charles
\nis set to lead its annual procession as the knights and ladies of
\nthe Order gather in St. George\u2019s Chapel, Windsor in one of the most
\nhistoric of all royal events.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1348 by King Edward III, who was \u201cso inspired by the
\ntales of King Arthur and the chivalry of the Knights of the Round
\nTable\u201d, the Order of the Garter was a group of honourable
\nknights.<\/p>\n
A legend persists that Edward III was dancing with a woman when
\nher garter fell to the floor. As courtiers around him laughed, the
\nKing picked up the garter and replaced it, uttering the Order\u2019s
\nmotto: \u201cHoni soit qui mal y pense\u201d \u2013 \u201cShame on him who thinks this
\nevil\u201d.<\/p>\n
The woman\u2019s identity has never been confirmed, but there are
\nthree accepted possibilities. First is his daughter in law, Joan,
\ncalled the Fair Maid of Kent, who married Edward III\u2019s eldest son
\nand became the first English woman to hold the title of Princess of
\nWales. Other possibilities are Katharine Grandison, Countess of
\nSalisbury \u2013 Edward III was surrounded by rumours that he was
\ninfatuated with a Countess of Salisbury and Katherine has long been
\na main contender. Another legend is that the woman whose garter he
\nscooped up was his wife, Philippa of Hainault, Queen of
\nEngland.<\/p>\n
In modern times, members of the Order are chosen for their
\npublic service instead of their aristocratic background, and at any
\ngiven time there can only be 24 knights (in addition to the
\nSovereign). The Sovereign and the Prince of Wales are always
\nmembers of the Order of the Garter.<\/p>\n
King Charles became the Sovereign of the Order of the Garter on
\nSeptember 8 2022 when he succeeded as Monarch. Prince William was
\nalready a member of the Order, having been named as such in April
\n2008. He was appointed by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who
\nmade the honour extra special by ensuring that her grandson became
\nthe 1,000th member of the Order of the Garter.<\/p>\n
One of the last people appointed to the Order by Queen Elizabeth
\nII was Queen Camilla who was named a Royal Lady of the Most Noble
\nOrder of the Garter on January 1 2022. Just weeks later, Elizabeth
\nII used her Platinum Jubilee address to confirm that Camilla would
\nbe known as Queen in the reign of Charles III. As Saint George is
\nthe patron saint of the Order, any new appointments are usually
\nannounced on St. George\u2019s Day, 23 April.<\/p>\n
The Prince of Wales acts as an ex-officio member. Other royals
\nto hold the honours are the Duke of Kent, the Duke of Gloucester
\nand Princess Alexandra. The Princess Royal and the Duke of
\nEdinburgh are also members. One of the first appointments of the
\nreign of Charles III was that of the Duchess of Gloucester.<\/p>\n
However, the honour can also be removed. In October 2025, it was
\nconfirmed that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, had been stripped of his
\nmembership of the Order of the Garter as King Charles removed all
\nhis royal titles and honours.<\/p>\n
European monarchs are sometimes given the Order of the Garter as
\nStranger Knights and Ladies, and these currently include the
\nEmperor of Japan, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, King Carl XVI Gustaf
\nof Sweden, King Juan Carlos of Spain, King Felipe of Spain, King
\nWillem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Princess Beatrix of the
\nNetherlands and King Harald of Norway.<\/p>\n
There are five officers in the Order: the Prelate (always the
\nBishop of Winchester), Chancellor, Registrar (the Dean of Windsor
\nsince Charles I\u2019s reign), Garter King of Arms, and Gentleman Usher
\nof the Black Rod.<\/p>\n
Members of the Order are always referred to as Knights or
\nLadies, and add \u201cKG\u201d or \u201cLG\u201d to their post-nominals. The Order of
\nthe Garter precedes all orders and merits except those of the
\nVictoria Cross and George Cross.<\/p>\n
Over time, some members of the Order have been degraded and
\ntheir heralds removed from St. George\u2019s Chapel (during the Second
\nWorld War, extra knights Emperor Hirohito and King Victor Emmanuel
\nIII of Italy were degraded, although the Emperor\u2019s was later
\nrestored during a State Visit in the 1970s). Henry VIII had several
\nof his knights beheaded, and Winston Churchill declined a spot in
\n1945 after his government had been voted out of office, saying that
\nhe couldn\u2019t accept the Order of the Garter if the people had given
\nhim the \u201cOrder of the Boot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Each member is given a stall at St. George\u2019s Chapel, where they
\ndisplay their banner, helmet and stall plate with their arms. After
\ntheir deaths, the banners and helmets are taken down but their
\nstall plate remains.<\/p>\n
Each year, Garter Day is celebrated in June in St. George\u2019s
\nChapel at Windsor Castle \u2013 the Order\u2019s Mother Church. The King
\nbegins Garter Day by formally investing any new members in the
\nThrone Room at Windsor Castle, then hosts a lunch for all members.
\nAfterwards, all members proceed by foot to St. George\u2019s Chapel for
\na service, known as the Garter Day procession, robed in velvet
\nrobes, insignia and plumed hats.<\/p>\n
