Bruce Springsteen\u2019s ode to American musical history has opened in New Jersey. The brand-new, 32,000-square-foot Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music<\/a> is filled with music memorabilia, including guitars from the Boss and the red ballcap pictured on the cover of Born in the USA<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

But while the center bears Springsteen\u2019s name, more than half of its hundreds of artifacts are related to other musical artists, reports the New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Nick Corasaniti. There\u2019s Frank Sinatra<\/a>\u2019s tuxedo, John Coltrane<\/a>\u2019s saxophone, Joni Mitchell\u2019s lyrics and George Clinton<\/a>\u2019s cape, to name a few. According to a statement<\/a> from the center, it aimed to both preserve Springsteen\u2019s legacy and celebrate the history and diversity of American music\u2014the latter of which was especially important to the New Jersey rocker.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a small link in a big chain,\u201d Springsteen tells the Times<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m the guy that came along and kind of picked up the flag. That\u2019s the way it works. You run with it for a while, and you pass it on to the next guy. I think the center reflects that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The center\u2019s first floor is dedicated to artists other than Bruce Springsteen.<\/p>\n

The Springsteen Center is located on the campus of Monmouth University<\/a> in West Long Branch\u2014about a mile away from the house<\/a> where Springsteen wrote \u201cBorn To Run<\/a>\u201d more than 50 years ago, launching himself into the American musical pantheon. The center, which cost about $50 million, was designed by New York architecture firm Cookfox<\/a>. It includes exhibition galleries, research archives, immersive interactive experiences and a performance theater.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach exhibit, it really keeps your attention I feel,\u201d visitor Michael Gould Jr. tells Asbury Park Press<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Chris Jordan. \u201cThere was a lot of cool memorabilia, like the lyrics before the actual songs were written, the shirts he wore on the album covers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gould Jr. and his father, Michael Gould, toured the museum on its opening day, June 13. \u201cI feel like we need more time,\u201d Gould told the Press<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve been here over three hours and we still need more time to absorb it all.\u201d<\/p>\n
