We\u2019re very privileged to be able to pursue music. Joy at their Laneway sideshows. Their EP <em>Half Moon Bay<\/em> and single \u201cRunning Out\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/best-australian-music-of-the-week-june-30th-july-6th-79574\/l\/the-moving-stills--half-moon-bay\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also featured<\/a> in our Best Australian Music of the week roundups.<\/p>\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form justify-content-center my-3 p-0 d-flex align-items-stretch bg-dark text-white\">\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form-info p-3\" style=\"justify-content: start;\">\n<h2 class=\"h5 mb-0 observer-title\">Love Music?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"observer-desc mb-2\"> Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian\/New Zealand music and globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"spinner d-none\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>More recently, the band sold out launch screenings for their new documentary, <em>being in a band<\/em>, a fly-on-the-wall look at life on the road, created by guitarist Mike Drennan.<\/p>\n<p>Next month, the band will tick off another milestone when they head to the UK for their first overseas shows. Dates are locked in for Manchester, London, and Bristol, alongside a London screening of\u00a0<em>being in a band.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Half Moon Bay\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"400\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/6ZNvHEDhXHfcjVDy7uBUIP?si=MWaMSf1NRNC6lfdyQfsD1g&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>Before they pack their bags, we caught up with The Moving Stills for the latest edition of our\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/divers-up-and-coming-australian-artists-95622\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Up-And-Coming Australian Artists<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Moving Stills\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gyro.to\/RockBand\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRock Band\u201d<\/a> is out now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Rolling Stone AU\/NZ: How much did music influence you in your early life?<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Moving Stills: Music was always around when we were young through our parents CD and record collections. We picked up our instruments during school, and went onto playing in bands through high school, spending our lunch breaks in the music rooms. It became a big part of us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>What artists influenced you growing up?<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the very early days, it was the Australia blues and roots scene \u2014 Angus &amp; Julia Stone, John Butler and The Waifs. When we reached high school we gravitated to Australian indie bands like The Preatures, DMA\u2019s and San Cisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>What are some career highlights so far?<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Our Australian headline tour last year was a really special one. We had just come off the back of an incredible run of shows with Spacey Jane, and the shows just felt electric. Lots of being in a band is working on things behind the scenes, a bit isolated and removed from the people who are listening to the music. So when we tour, and connect with those people, it is the best recharge and reminder of why we do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Tell us about your latest release.<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We wrote and recorded \u201cRock Band\u201d on a holiday\/writing trip in California last year. It came out of a week of\u00a0 writing with our friend Henry Nowhere in LA. We struck a great chemistry very early on, which allowed for us to try a bunch of new things; slowing songs down a little and having fun with the lyrics and instrumentation. It started with a guitar riff and vocal melody that had been in the voice memos for a few years. It\u2019s for anyone who has pursued something, when there\u2019s pressure to opt for something more reliable. We\u2019re very privileged to be able to pursue music. We hope the song can be a way to encourage people to follow their dreams, and maybe start a rock band?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>What kind of personality traits and values do you believe it takes to succeed in the music industry?<\/b><b\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We are still working it out, but kindness is important. It\u2019s a challenging industry, and everyone is trying to strive and survive. These shows in the UK are our first international shows apart from shows in NZ. It\u2019s been in the plans for a couple of years, so it\u2019s super exciting. We are also doing a screening of our new doco,<em> being in a band<\/em>, in London. The doco was made by Mike over the last couple of years. It\u2019s a fly-on-the-wall-style film, giving insight into our world.<\/p>\n<p><b>What are your goals for 2026 and beyond?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve got a bunch of new music in the bag, and will be releasing that over the coming months. We\u2019re also looking forward to playing a bunch of shows and festivals in Australia and overseas.
