{"id":2462014,"date":"2026-06-16T13:22:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T13:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2462014"},"modified":"2026-06-16T13:22:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T13:22:50","slug":"lubbock-to-celebrate-juneteenth-holiday-with-parade-fireworks-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/lubbock-to-celebrate-juneteenth-holiday-with-parade-fireworks-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Lubbock to celebrate Juneteenth holiday with parade, fireworks, music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\"><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"74109376007\" style=\"min-height: 240px;\" class=\"column twelve-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lubbock will mark the upcoming <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lubbockonline.com\/story\/news\/2025\/06\/19\/lubbock-juneteenth-organizer-reflects-on-history-eyes-going-forward\/84275917007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z116461p001750c001750e006200v116461d--64--b--64--&amp;gca-ft=399&amp;gca-ds=sophi\">Juneteenth holiday<\/a> with four days of celebrations and events starting Thursday, June 18 through June 21.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme, The Reunion, aims to bring the community together through a vibrant series of events that honor Black history, culture and freedom, according to Lubbock&#8217;s RISE UP Juneteenth Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theme came from us just looking at the state of the country and what we&#8217;re in and how fitting the time is to call a reunion where you can invite friends, family or neighbors and the entire community to come together and celebrate what the Emancipation Proclamation meant,\u201d said organizer D\u2019Juana McPherson.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations begin Thursday with a kickoff event from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Patterson Branch Library, 1836 Parkway Drive, followed by a glow-in-the-dark party that evening after 5:30 p.m. at the Patterson Branch Library.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>On Friday, there will be a communitywide cookout featuring live music and food starting at 6:30 p.m. in Mackenzie Park.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s events begin with Senior Breakfast &#8211; free for folks 62 and older &#8211; from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the Mae Simmons Community Center, 2004 Oak Ave.<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Juneteenth Parade will run from 10 to 11:15 a.m. starting near Broadway and Avenue A, turning right onto Canyon Lakes Drive and ending at the R.O.C.C. Fitness parking lot. The annual parade featured dancers, cowboys and a marching band.\" orientation=\"horizontal\" class=\"spacer-large\" util-module-path=\"elements\/media\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Celebrating Juneteenth<\/h2>\n<p>Juneteenth, which is\u00a0now a federal holiday on June 19, marks\u00a0the emancipation of slaves after the Civil War.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Though former President Abraham Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it wasn\u2019t until two years later in Galveston that many\u00a0individuals learned about their freedom. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Texas has marked Juneteenth as a state holiday since 1980, but it wasn\u2019t until 2021 that President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making it a federal holiday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cIt is a celebration of resiliency of the human spirit,\u201d\u00a0Lubbock event organizer Cory Powell said. \u201cIt&#8217;s a tenacity of those who, you know, endured the horrible institution of enslavement and to get to the place where they were no longer in that space, but had literally come to a spot of recognizing, liberty and justice for all being a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powell noted that all the events in this year\u2019s celebration are free for everyone and include events for all age ranges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a celebration of the community. We want people to realize, regardless of age, from the cradle beyond, there&#8217;s something for everyone,\u201d Powell said.<\/p>\n<p>Lubbock&#8217;s RISE UP Juneteenth organization states that all are encouraged to participate in this celebration of the resilient human spirit.
