Lionel Richie wants to protect his voice in the age of AI.<\/p>\n
According to<\/a> intellectual property attorney<\/a> Josh Gerben, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter filed four trademark applications on an intent-to-use basis to protect the sound of his voice. The filing seeks protection for the phrases \u201cHello, Is It Me You\u2019re Looking For?\u201d \u201cSay You, Say Me,\u201d \u201cEasy Like Sunday Morning,\u201d and \u201cAll Night Long.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe applications that Richie filed indicate that the sounds will eventually be used in connection with providing music<\/a> and entertainment information, videos, and news about a musical artist,\u201d Gerben wrote.<\/p>\n Gerben said that Richie would have to prove that the sound or lyrics are being used as a brand identifier for the aforementioned services, rather than merely being a phrase from a song.<\/p>\n Gerben also mentioned that the intent of the applications is to protect his voice in the AI<\/a> era, as the trademark filing could prevent his voice from being used or a similar sound from being produced.<\/p>\n \u201cIf Richie were able to obtain registrations for these sound marks, it could provide another layer of protection against AI-generated content that sounds enough like him to make consumers believe he was involved,\u201d Gerben said.<\/p>\n Richie isn\u2019t the only artist looking to protect his or her voice and work from AI use. Taylor Swift also filed trademark applications in April for two phrases, one of which is \u201cHey, it\u2019s Taylor Swift, and you can listen to my new album, \u2018The Life of a Showgirl,\u2019 on demand, on Amazon<\/a> Music Unlimited,\u201d celebrity.land reports.<\/a> She also filed a trademark to protect her image, particularly her image in a bodysuit holding a pink guitar.<\/p>\n \u201cAttempting to register a celebrity\u2019s spoken voice is a new use of trademark registration that has not been tested in court before,\u201d Gerben noted, per celebrity.land.<\/p>\n Matthew McConaughey has also filed trademarks<\/a> to protect his image and voice.
