During his time at OSB, Protopapas has focused on elevating the orchestra, chorus, and production standards, building a high-performing administrative team, and shepherding the careers of local and regional artists.<\/p>\n
Production highlights from his tenure include Massenet\u2019s \u201cManon;\u201d Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u201cEugene Onegin;\u201d and Handel\u2019s \u201cSemele\u201d and \u201cCaesar & Cleopatra;\u201d as well as Cat\u00e1n\u2019s \u201cIl Postino;\u201d and the California premieres of Armienta\u2019s \u201cZorro and Aldridge,\u201d and Garfein\u2019s \u201cElmer Gantry.\u201d<\/p>\n
OSB\u2019s upcoming 33rd season at the Lobero Theatre features Giuseppe Verdi\u2019s \u201cRigoletto,\u201d Gioachino Rossini\u2019s \u201cThe Barber of Seville,\u201d and Craig Bohmler\u2019s \u201cRiders of the Purple Sage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born in Athens, Greece, Protopapas studied archaeology and art history at the University of Athens before moving to the U.S. in 1993 on an Onassis Foundation scholarship.<\/p>\n
He studied piano at The Boston Conservatory, and conducting at Boston University. Before coming to Santa Barbara, he served as artistic director of Tulsa Opera and held positions with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera, and Santa Fe Opera.<\/p>\n
