There\u2019s an obvious risk when a producer builds an entire project around a message. Too often, the music ends up feeling like an afterthought, buried beneath worthy intentions and lofty ambitions. Thankfully, HZPROD\u2019s\u00a0WarTorn<\/em>\u00a0largely avoids that trap. This is a record with something to say, but more importantly, it understands that listeners still need a reason to stay beyond the message itself.<\/p>\n Opening with\u00a0Save The Children (Intro)<\/em>, the EP, I wasn\u2019t expecting this, a big old synth takes you into a lovely asian traditional song. From there,\u00a0AFRICA<\/em>\u00a0expands the scope, combining atmospheric production with a sense of urgency that feels genuine rather than performative. HZPROD clearly has an ear for creating mood, layering textures and samples in a way that keeps the project cinematic without drifting into self-indulgence.<\/p>\n The strongest moments arrive during\u00a0War Within<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Slave Music<\/em>. Here, the concept and production find their sweet spot. The beats hit with enough weight to satisfy hip-hop purists, while the alternative influences stop things from feeling trapped in boom-bap nostalgia. There\u2019s a welcome roughness to parts of the production too. Rather than sounding unfinished, it gives the record a human quality that suits its themes.q<\/p>\n What makes\u00a0WarTorn<\/em>\u00a0particularly interesting is that it doesn\u2019t come from the perspective of a seasoned industry veteran. HZPROD openly admits this is both a debut project and part of his own learning curve as a producer. In some ways, that honesty becomes one of the project\u2019s strengths. There\u2019s ambition pouring out of every track. You can hear someone testing boundaries, trying ideas and refusing to wait for perfect circumstances before releasing their work.<\/p>\n That said, the EP occasionally suffers from the same ambition that makes it compelling.\u00a0Peace?<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Dreamer<\/em>\u00a0contain strong ideas but don\u2019t always land with the same impact as the standout moments earlier in the record. At times, the arrangements become crowded with concepts competing for attention. The listener understands the message, but the songs occasionally sacrifice memorability in favour of thematic weight. A few more moments of restraint could have allowed certain hooks and melodies to breathe.<\/p>\n Closing track\u00a0God Is The Key<\/em>\u00a0brings the project to a thoughtful conclusion, tying together the themes. It\u2019s a fitting end to an EP that never loses sight of its purpose.<\/p>\n This is a project built by a New York-based producer with Bosnian roots who invested heavily in an idea he believed deserved a platform.
