A week later, a young doctor was killed on the same street by a car doing the same thing: driving into the bike lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBut it was funny,\u201d she adds dryly, \u201cto be writing about the mayor and hating the mayor and then I was nearly killed \u2014 and if not that, nearly taken off my line of work \u2014 because of a decision made by the mayor to move away from the bike infrastructure that we\u2019ve all been pleading for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat mayor-criticizing song became \u201cPeople\u2019s Loser,\u201d one of the nuggets on Sad13\u2019s new mixtape <em>1331<\/em>. A proudly DIY collection of 13 short songs ranging from 57 to 107 seconds, Dupuis\u2019 third project under the moniker \u2014\u00a0and first since 2020 \u2014 lands July 10 on Exploding In Sound, Speedy Ortiz\u2019s original label home. Today, the first three songs arrive: \u201cI Am Now Completely Invisible,\u201d \u201cArt Institute\u201d and \u201cWatermelon Manicure.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFollowing the injury, Dupuis\u2019 \u201clife flipped over into a basically full-time job trying to rehab it,\u201d powering through extensive nerve damage as her <em>1331<\/em> material, not to mention gigging with Speedy Ortiz, took a backseat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMy favorite thing that I learned is that all orthopedic doctors are, like, really into guitar,\u201d she says. When some began to cast doubt on whether she\u2019d be able to play again, Dupuis mentioned that she\u2019d recently appeared on <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s \u201c250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time\u201d list. \u201cI\u2019ve never dropped something like that,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I found it very helpful in navigating the orthopedic-industrial complex. I wound up suddenly with the premier orthopedic surgeon at the hospital. I go to the Sixers\u2019 PT person and I go to the Eagles\u2019 PRP [platelet-rich plasma injection] person. They take insurance. [The doctors] pass my name along because they\u2019re like, \u2018Guitar player!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile <em>1331<\/em> is lyrically a snapshot of Dupuis\u2019 headspace in spring 2024, with nods to the fights for Palestinian justice and trans rights, her injury heavily informed the final product. When fans on Reddit wanted to hear full-length versions of the themes, \u201cin my mind, I was like, \u2018Well, these are complete. One-minute songs are valid,&#8217;\u201d Dupuis recalls. \u201c[<em>1331<\/em>] was not only an excuse to dive into the format, but also a way to validate it to other listeners: that one-minute songs are just as full, if not more so, than the four- or five-minute version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd while Dupuis cherishes the collaborative spirit of Speedy Ortiz, she opted to return to her solo, DIY roots for <em>1331<\/em>, writing, recording and engineering it herself \u2014 the first time she\u2019d done so in 15 years. Sad13 is \u201cthe place where I can be myself and screw around and see what kinds of weird noises I can coax out of a guitar or a synth,\u201d she says of the creative space that also allowed her to dabble in shorter run times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSpeedy\u2019s 2024 support run for Silversun Pickups inspired Dupuis to rethink how she writes guitar hooks, and an opportunity to watch Liz Phair in the studio prompted a change in how she records vocals. \u201cShe sits to record vocals, and she sits in a crazy way that she said opens up some different aspect of her voice,\u201d Dupuis says. \u201cThere\u2019s more range on this record than on anything I\u2019ve done \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s over three octaves. I think the sitting-down-weird trick is genius. Liz is God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTechnically speaking, <em>1331<\/em> challenged Dupuis, who explains that after years in Speedy Ortiz her \u201cstandards have gotten a bit high.\u201d The project forced her to \u201clearn a lot of new software,\u201d and reacquaint herself with the all-encompassing nature of a DIY project. As she continues to accumulate production credits for herself and others, that\u2019s paying dividends: Dupuis is currently producing a full album for the first time, by her \u201cfavorite Philly band,\u201d the rising trio Grocer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFrom Grocer to periodic gigs with the bands like Ovlov and Grass Is Green that Speedy started out playing basements with, Dupuis remains entrenched in her corner of the DIY world \u2014 and fittingly, <em>1331<\/em> is her return to Exploding In Sound, the respected indie label whose first release was Speedy\u2019s first record, and that has since released artists including LVL Up, Palehound and Washer. \u201cIt\u2019s a return to roots, but we both have so much more experience,\u201d she says with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn those intervening years, the business environment for labels like Exploding In Sound and artists like Dupuis has become even less forgiving than it once was \u2014 but she remains committed to her craft, a sentiment documented on <em>1331<\/em>\u2018s \u201cPretty Little Lifers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u2018Lifer\u2019 is the term for someone who will just do this forever,\u201d she says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if they get huge; it doesn\u2019t matter if they get huge and then go back to playing basements. You\u2019re in it for the love of the game, and you\u2019re going to play music for life.
