Syracuse.com<\/a> (NY), Emily Kulkus writes, \u201cAfter a two-year national search, the Syracuse Orchestra has hired Austin Chanu as its new music director. Chanu was one of six finalists the orchestra brought to Syracuse for an extensive interview process that included myriad conversations with musicians, the board, community members and the chance to rehearse and conduct two local performances. Most recently, Chanu, 33, served as assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, he earned his master\u2019s and doctorate degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. His Syracuse position begins July 6. Chanu replaces Lawrence Loh who spent 10 years as music director before stepping down in May 2025\u2026. Chanu said his interactions with everyone related to the orchestra felt natural and \u2018like a perfect fit.\u2019\u2026 Said Syracuse Orchestra executive director Pam Murchison, \u2018There was a distinct and articulate hunger, and also a plan, for how to connect with the community outside of the concert hall.\u2019\u2026 Chanu has worked as a guest conductor leading orchestras around the country and the world.
