“Well, here’s the problem with Jamie Lee’s argument,” Guthrie began<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Jamie Lee Curtis<\/a> and Mariska Hargitay<\/a> sparked an internet debate over the pronunciation of one of the country’s largest cities this week \u2014 and now Savannah Guthrie<\/a> has entered the chat.<\/p>\n The Today<\/em> co-host, 54, sounded off on the pair’s viral Actors on Actors<\/a> aside about how to pronounce “Los Angeles” during her Tuesday, June 16 broadcast alongside colleagues Willie Geist, Jenna Bush Hager<\/a> and Sheinelle Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n During Curtis and Hargitay’s joint interview for Variety<\/em> and celebrity.land, published on Monday, June 15, the duo debated how to properly say the name of the city. Curtis, 67, pronounced it as “LOWS Angeles,” while Hargitay, 62, opted for more of a “LOSS Angeles.”<\/p>\n While Jones said the internet believed Curtis was “technically” right, Guthrie pointed out a flaw in Curtis’ argument.<\/p>\n Never miss a story \u2014 sign up for <\/strong>PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter<\/strong><\/a> to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n “Well, here’s the problem with Jamie Lee’s argument,” Guthrie said. “She’s saying ‘LOWS,’ which is correct in Spanish, ‘ANN-GELES.’ It should either be ‘LOWS AHN-GELES’ or ‘LOSS Angeles.'”<\/p>\n After her colleagues called her “judge Guthrie,” Guthrie compared the city’s name to that of Los Feliz and explained her way of thinking. “I’m from Arizona, there are a lot of towns where there’s the correct pronunciation and then there’s the way everybody says it.”<\/p>\n “And also, some people that mispronounce everything feel at home,” Hager said.<\/p>\n “I know you feel seen,” Guthrie joked.<\/p>\n Indeed, Curtis and Hargitay did not see eye to eye on how to pronounce the city’s name in their one-on-one discussion. The pair even asked those around them on the set of the interview how they pronounce the name of California’s most populous city. “Nobody says that. You guys, please God, let’s move on,” Hargitay said, before apologizing to Curtis for stopping her in the middle of saying “deep s—.”<\/p>\n “I am about to say something deep,” Curtis added. “It’s okay, you can laugh.”<\/p>\n The duo’s Actors on Actors<\/em> chat wasn’t just focused on L.A. Hargitay also opened up about making her Broadway debut for a six-week run in Every Brilliant Thing<\/em>, calling the opportunity a “dream come true” and comparing it to “playing” in a “different sandbox.”<\/p>\n “I am very unlike [SVU<\/em>‘s] Olivia Benson, but nobody knows that except for my friends. Being onstage has been my lifelong goal,” Hargitay said. “[In my 20s], I became friends with the amazing [stage actress] Kathleen Chalfant. She said, ‘Don\u2019t sell out and do TV.’ An hour later I got SVU<\/em>. So that was a hard call to make. Getting this call from my agent with the offer for the play Every Brilliant Thing<\/em>, I was pinching myself.”<\/p>\n
