But for nearly the first century of this country\u2019s existence \u2014 and even the decades preceding its founding \u2014 not everyone enjoyed those freedoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it wasn\u2019t until June 19, 1865, that the last enslaved people in the U.S. learned they were free \u2014 a day now commemorated as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/explore\/stories\/historical-legacy-juneteenth\">Juneteenth<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a day that symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice,\u201d the Metropolitan King County Council wrote in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1CrYskEcFJ\/\">a statement proclaiming the holiday in the Seattle area<\/a>. \u201cJuneteenth is an opportunity to reflect on African Americans\u2019 progress and contributions, and to look forward to achieving full economic and social equity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This weekend, many local organizations are celebrating our diverse Black communities and heritage in the Seattle area. Plus, several Juneteenth celebrations will also double as watch parties for the FIFA Men\u2019s World Cup match between the U.S. and Australia, set to begin at noon Friday at Seattle Stadium, the name of Lumen Field during the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few events to check out in the Seattle area.
