Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 \u2014 two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed \u2014 when the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed African Americans<\/a>, as well as plantation owners and enslavers, that \u201call slaves are free.\u201d<\/p>\n Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, but communities around the country have a long history of coming together on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S.<\/p>\n Federal offices including the U.S. Postal Service will be closed on Juneteenth.
