As heard on their new track out today, the Raleigh post-punk band RIBS are like a harder, meaner, spacier Hold Steady, mixing classic rock riffs with Mike Wallace’s spoken and shouted narration. After a long and accomplished tenure as a live act, RIBS released their debut album Junk Dynasty Leaderboard<\/a><\/em> last year. They’re putting out their second, COLD RIBS<\/em>, this summer via the great North Carolina indie institution Three Lobed, whose Cory Rayborn seemed to have a lot of fun describing the band in a note to Bandcamp followers today:<\/p>\n During my years of fandom for this project, I keep coming back to the concept of a Southern Mark E. Smith vibrating and over-caffeinated through too much Bojangle’s sweet tea while riffing over and band with influences as varied as Fugazi, Faust, This Heat and Protomartyr is a one of kind thing. Their nod to Led Beefheart on the sticker isn’t far off, either.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The lead single from COLD RIBS is the humorously titled “Not A Boogie.” The guitar loop slices and dices with style. The drumbeat slaps. The bass grooves hard. Over top of this rhythmic chaos, Wallace rants and raves with urgency and charisma.
