{"id":2466448,"date":"2026-06-19T04:10:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T04:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2466448"},"modified":"2026-06-19T04:10:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T04:10:43","slug":"ron-howard-and-brian-grazer-on-grinch-sequel-youtube-filmmakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/ron-howard-and-brian-grazer-on-grinch-sequel-youtube-filmmakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Ron Howard and Brian Grazer on &#8216;Grinch&#8217; Sequel, YouTube Filmmakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFresh off <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/grinch-sequel-in-the-works-jim-carrey-1236595265\/\">the news<\/a> that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ron-howard\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ron-howard_1\" data-tag=\"ron-howard\">Ron Howard<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/brian-grazer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_brian-grazer_1\" data-tag=\"brian-grazer\">Brian Grazer<\/a> are developing a sequel to their 2000 hit\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/how-grinch-stole-christmas\/\" id=\"auto-tag_how-grinch-stole-christmas_1\" data-tag=\"how-grinch-stole-christmas\">How the Grinch Stole Christmas<\/a><\/em>, the pair sat down for a wide-ranging conversation at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ucla\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ucla_1\" data-tag=\"ucla\">UCLA<\/a> Entertainment Symposium, where they gave a little tease of the new film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpeaking to<em> The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> editor-in-chief Maer Roshan on Thursday, Howard \u2014 who is returning to direct <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jim-carrey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jim-carrey_1\" data-tag=\"jim-carrey\">Jim Carrey<\/a> in his role as the classic Dr. Seuss character the Grinch \u2014 said the sequel is \u201csomething we\u2019ve thought about for a long time, and you know what, it\u2019s an idea that got all five or six of the brain trust excited. So it\u2019s worth a try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCarrey is looking to return despite famously struggling through the production, as Grazer and Howard \u2014 who have been partners in production company <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/imagine-entertainment\/\" id=\"auto-tag_imagine-entertainment_1\" data-tag=\"imagine-entertainment\">Imagine Entertainment<\/a> for 40 years \u2014 recounted how two weeks into filming the star told them he could no longer endure the extensive makeup and contacts needed to become the Grinch and would return his $20 million salary, with interest. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGrazer explained that he told Carrey to take the weekend to think about it before formally quitting, and in the meantime, \u201cI had met somebody from the CIA that teaches State Department people how to survive torture.\u201d The expert flew out that weekend to meet with Carrey, which seemed to do the trick. \u201cI did try things before that, like having comics come and talk to Jim and try to amuse him,\u201d Grazer noted, but after the meeting, \u201con Monday he said, \u2018No, I\u2019m gonna stick with it.\u2019 They developed a method for Jim to diffuse the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHoward added, \u201cMostly he just toughed his way through it and he also wouldn\u2019t downgrade the costume, or wouldn\u2019t not wear those contact lenses; that was before CGI could easily replace and color his eyes and things like that. He did go through this, he did learn a lot from this expert, talked a lot about it and relied upon those techniques, and really muscled through it. And by the way, I\u2019ve never been more in awe of an actor creating a character and performance in any film I\u2019ve done.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tElsewhere in the chat, the duo reacted to the recent success of <em>Obsession<\/em>, <em>Backrooms<\/em> and the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/curry-barker-obsession-interview-1236620580\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">young YouTube filmmakers<\/a> behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think right at this moment we\u2019re having a kind of an <em>Easy Rider<\/em> moment,\u201d said Howard, noting that he had begun working with young YouTube auteurs years before they were in vogue. \u201cI think there\u2019s a generational shift that\u2019s happening right now \u2014 a couple of great examples of YouTube-born, talented filmmakers and the people they choose to cast and the kinds of scenes they choose to write, and the cultural tone they achieve, that is incredibly effective, organic to them, and exciting,\u201d Howard said. \u201cIt happened for Brian and I and a whole generation of Baby Boomers \u2014 there was a moment when the industry sort of turned to people our age and said, \u2018We need you, you know something we don\u2019t quite know.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGrazer was a bit more skeptical, insisting that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/youtube-box-office-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hollywood simply chasing after YouTubers<\/a> \u201cwon\u2019t work\u201d and \u201cthe format is not that different than other things that have happened generations before, it\u2019s just a newer version.\u201d Howard added, \u201cThe people who are breaking through right now are people who\u2019ve done hours and hours and hours, talk about your 10,000 hours. They\u2019ve been filming \u2014 they have chops but the big question is, are they going to choose the right stories?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe conversation also touched upon what stars can still make or break a movie (with Grazer shouting out Leonardo DiCaprio and Zendaya as two standouts), the challenges from the streamers\u2019 risk-averse business model, and the U.S. government\u2019s sluggish response to the industry\u2019s economic troubles. Grazer said Trump currently has more power over the industry than Ted Sarandos, and rapped the administration for not doing more to help Hollywood out of its current woes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBoth men said they regarded AI as an inevitability that has the power to help Hollywood as well as harm it. \u201cI use AI to build stories, and that actually speeds things up so much. So if I have an idea for a movie \u2014 I started as a writer, Ron did as well \u2014 you can build your idea with Claude, you can build the whole thing into an incredible outline,\u201d Grazer said. \u201cYou still need a screenwriter \u2014 I always believe you need a screenwriter 100 percent, but to get a screenwriter on just an idea where you\u2019re pitching it could take a year; for you to build it to a point where you can actually show it to a screenwriter could take one week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHoward noted, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of promise out there, and right at this point, I\u2019m not seeing a lot of efficiencies that you can really apply to a project today\u2026 it\u2019s also our job to look at the ethical use of these tools and best practice and be responsible about it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe pair \u2014 who claim they have never once yelled at each other in their four decades of partnership \u2014 also revealed they have no plans to retire, as Grazer emphasized, \u201cIf the business stops, then I stop, but for me it\u2019s almost \u2014 we made five or six movies this year, but I feel like it\u2019s a hobby. I like it, I like puzzle solving, and that\u2019s what this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor his part, Howard added, \u201cThe one thing that I\u2019ve always told myself is a lot of people want my job, and if I get to the point where I\u2019m blas\u00e9 about it, I\u2019m phoning it in, I\u2019m lazy, I don\u2019t want to face it, then I\u2019m going to let them have the job. But right now I don\u2019t mind getting up at five in the morning and dealing with the cast. Those are adventures for me.
